Art Brut at Indietracks 2009
I’d enjoyed the singles from their debut a few years earlier but had never particularly got into them and wasn’t even really aware they were still active. They had so much more energy live. Knocked my little socks off

Still a great live band when they play now
Metric at Concorde 2, 2006
Went along with a new housemate and her friends as they had a spare ticket. Didn’t know anyone and only had a passing interest in the band.
Band absolutely killed it, crowd was bouncing off the walls. Emily Haines had (has) such a magnetic stage presence.
Have seen them twice since. Good shows, but nothing approaching that kind of atmosphere. Maybe it had something to do with the band being at the point of breaking through (and the audience being aware of this), but there was an excitement and tension that is hard (maybe impossible?) to replicate once that point has past.
Drake was amazing
Yard Act can play
Obongajayor is about 10 million times better live than on record
Odesza
Quite boring on record. Dreamy summer vibes live.
I was not a fan at the time but saw paramore in 2008 for my friend’s birthday and enjoyed it despite expecting not to (I was a little shit back then and very snobbish about music), did not enjoy their support though (new found glory) who were shite and I stand by that. Some guy outside tried to sell me a “paramount” shirt after which I still think about sometimes
Was surprised at how tight Kurupt FM were as a live spectacle and how talented Grindah is as a live MC. Had an absolute blast
Took my mum to see UB40 a few years back as she’s a huge fan but had never seen them before, and can I just say: was great fun - that band have some serious bangers in their catalogue!
Saw Despised Icon at Damnation a year or so ago expecting them to be breakdown filled chugalug deathcore from bro-looking dudes in snapbacks and basketball jerseys. They were exactly like that but somehow it absolutely ruled.
feels like it was actually too good to fit with the question being asked in this thread but
mate asked if I wanted to go see Self Esteem in March 2022 at Kentish Town Forum cos she had a spare ticket and I think at the time I’d never heard of her, or at least I certainly didn’t know her music at all
listened to the album once and thought it might be decent fun, but really was just going cos I wanted to hang out with my mate, she lives on the other side of town and is a parent so don’t see her as much as I used to
and then it turned out to be an all time top 5 gig, just astonishingly good in every way
Went to watch Anna Meredith at a festival a few years ago cos my mate wanted to watch her, assumed it would be her behind some decks/keys, maybe some visuals and that would be about it. Didn’t realise she’d have a ridiculously good band with her and be really going for it, and throwing in an Enter Sandman cover at the end. One of my favourite live acts currently.
Got dragged along to see the end of the Pet Shop Boys set at the Electric Picnic in 2006(?)
Blew my mind! Looked at them very differently ever since. Still need to catch them again.
I’ve never really loved Tropical Fuck Storm on record, not enough to deliberately put them on. Have loved them both times I’ve happened to see them live.
