I’ve been many times before and am just back from my most recent holiday, now thinking of spending some more time there next year, possibly even working from there in my current job (I can do WFH) so just need accom with wi fi and a desk.
Any Diser’s who live in or have experience of Tenerife I’m all ears.
Thinking of possibly splitting my time there with a few weeks staying in Santa Cruz then a few weeks down south in or near Costa Adeje (where I normally stay).
Currently looking at Airbnb.
I’d be out there on my own but hoping to have friends out to visit.
I didn’t do much as was there with family and was staying Costa Teguise. There was a little pub with a micro brewery there which was nice. I climbed up a hill near there too.
I hired a bike and cycled a around a bit, would recommend.
Teguise (different to Costa Teguise) was nice and had a big market on Sunday, a lot of that but some decent stuff and the restaurants there looked nice and there was like music and stuff in the square.
There’s a cool building that was Omar Shariff’s house which is worth stopping at for a look round and a beer if you’re passing but probably not worth going out ofr your way for. (Museo lagomar)
The was a nice little vegan restaurant in Arrecife (the v factor)
My niece and nephew had a good time and the big water park.
We stayed in Los Gigantes this year as we were looking specifically for quiet spots. Beautiful cliffs and an endearingly tiny beach. We were taking it easy so didn’t do much in the way of nature walks/hiking but would love to go there again and do some stuff properly.
Got an Airbnb with a decent kitchen near a Lidl, restaurants and pubs were full of tourist traps as expected but found some nice spots with friendly and chatty staff.
Best sunsets I’ve ever seen and watching the tides was mesmerising.
We’re looking at going to Tenerife in October for a week. My partner wants to take his bike and ride up Teide, which it looks like you can do from anywhere, really (he’s a strong rider so the 50km+ of uphill won’t really be an issue).
I’ve narrowed it down to Los Gigantes or maybe somewhere like El Medano. Puerto de la Cruz has been ruled out because it feels like it might be a bit far from anything we may want to drive to (and the hour long drive from the airport is putting me off for some reason). Will certainly be renting a car though.
I’m looking at at least breakfast being included but I had my heart set on all inclusive if I’m honest, I just can’t find a reasonably-priced AI resort in any of the quieter areas.
I have found a nice looking 2 bed apartment in Medano but it’s gonna lack a gym I think I’ll nee / any hotel glitz / activities for a 4yo, which they do have at the hotel I was eyeing up in Los Gigantes (Royal Sun Resort).
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME DECIDE PLEASE
We like beaches, swimming in the sea, pools, ice cream, walks suitable for a capable 4yo, nice views, weird transport, boat trips.
Los Gigantes is very pretty and not too far from the more rural NW of Tenerife (amazing scenery and walks), so if it’s better for young ones I’d probably go there. Not been to El Medano specifically but it’s more flat and windy and banana-farmy in that area
Either/or would work cycling-wise, like you say, Teide is accesible from anywhere. The nearest ascent from LG is fantastic; the more classic Vilaflor ascents are easily accesible from the likes of El Medano. Might be worth considering renting a bike; Free Motion offer excellent bikes (Specialized, Cannondale, Merida etc) at good hire prices, with Di2 readily available if he likes his electronic gears
Oh, and LG is the perfect starting point for the utterly incredible Masca/Teno lighthouse ride
I go to Tenerife a few times a year but tend to self cater nowadays. However…
Los Gigantes is very nice but is that bit further out (maybe not such an issue if you’ve a car, though). I’ve stayed in the Barcelo there back in 2017 which was a nice AI, I’d recommend.
I should mention that buses are really quite good and cheap if you wish to stay south and go up north. Likewise from the airport I normally just take a bus tto and fro nowadays. Look at a Bono card if you’re interested in buses.
Alot of the AI hotels are in Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. I’ve used Las Dalias (Iberostar hotel)a few times and again it’s a decent AI though I’ve not been since 2018. These are touristy areas however not so bad and it’s very easy to just base yourself there and get out for daytrips however if you’re doing that would you think about self catering? These areas are also much closer to the airport too.
In Costa Adeje there is a gym called Clan Fitness which I use as you can buy a 2 week membership and it’s pretty reasonable I must say.

We’ve actually now booked to go in April - staying in an AI resort in Golf del Sur cos it was incredibly cheap and ticks our boxes for a holiday with a 4yo. However we really are just using the hotel as a base and will be out most days.
Got car rental sorted (why’s Autoreisen so much cheaper than any other rental company in the Canaries??) and planning some stuff: whale watching, driving up Teide and getting the cable car, beaches…
However we kinda just like doing interesting walks with our kiddo when on holiday, maybe 4-5km max and not too tough (no scrambling but she doesn’t mind hills or gravelly/slippery slopes). Any recs mates?
Barranco del Infierno was a lovely walk when we went about 10 years ago, they made us wear helmets though which was odd as there’s a steep drop to one side but it didn’t feel dangerous in the slightest
There was a good chicken restaurant at the start/end of the walk, they did those Tenerife crinkly potatoes and green and red sauce that I still think about sometimes
If you’re in Golf Del Sur then you’ll be close to El Medano which is a nice surfing village with a few shops and bars on the front. There’s a nice brunch type cafe which I can try to remember the name of if you’re interested.
Will you be heading to the north of the island at all? There are some beautiful spots up there.
Did this a few weeks ago funnily enough. Might be towards the upper limit distance-wise (think it was about 6km total) but it really was beautiful. Lots of cacti and interesting plants that it would be fun to point out to kids. Saw some kids on shoulders too if that’s an option. Nice waterfall at the end (spoilers).
right you’re all sleeping on Santa Cruz, there’s loads going on. full of interesting buildings and structures to walk around and look at and go “ahh look at that”, beautiful parks everywhere you go, gorgeous and tranquil botanical gardens, loads of museums and similar cultural venues to peruse, loads of really nice food spots, not got hardly any Brits to speak of, there’s even a tram!
