Had an awful prick of a manager when I ran the bar in our university. The bar had come under the control of a large catering company and he was the son of a managing director. I was 22 and managing the pub and the was 21 and managing me, a completely ludicrous situation.

He was a right arse, a complete sexist who, when interviewing potential employees came to me afterwards commenting on which ones looked good and which ones didn’t. He started sleeping with one of the barmaids, while also cheating on her with another one for about a year.

Everyone hated him, from the security staff, to the local Gardaí to the patrons. He was a smarmy git, completely two-faced. I left the company after four years with them, couldn’t stand the man. The bar has since been completely run into the ground, with no-one going there anymore. I’d like to think it was his fault and that it happened when I left was more than a coincidence.

This?

My problems are usually with my manager’s manager. Senior managers obviously suck.

Current manager is probably also my best. Gives me enough autonomy to do my job whilst also being around to help me to grow and develop in the role. Is always encouraging and constructive. Decent bloke too. Couldn’t fault him.

Worst: manager in my previous role in the charity sector. Terrible at his job - always giving incorrect, imcomplete advice. Cut loads of corners and left us open for a considerable clawback on the contract we were running. Baby boomer who called himself a “born-again atheist” like he was the first person to have thought of the idea of a godless universe. Massive sexist / general creep. Pandered to everyone in the team. Can’t believe I agreed to take on the team and contract after him - nearly ruined me mentally as a result (took me a good seven or eight years to build up the courage to take on another management role). Had this sign up on his desk:

please-only-one-person-sign-k-9954_GrnRev

Had a succession of crap managers when working as an administrator in the financial services sector, but none were a patch on him.

I had a terrible manager once who was racist as fuck, especially against west Africans. I later found out he was flouting several employment laws and tax laws

nice

Manager ATM is not my preferred type of person. They’ve never worked in this industry fully so I don’t think they actually understand our work, but has a utopian theoretical ideal of how things work.

Also makes us stand up at the start of the day and talk about what we did yesterday and plan to do today. Think I’m going to make it up from now on

What now???

When I worked at Morrisons my manager would always pretend that they were ‘short of trolley staff’ every time it snowed or pissed it down and as such I was demoted to trudging round the car park collecting trolleys.

Actually she also used to pronounce ‘bottle’ as ‘bockle’ which is, if anything, even more infuriating.

Store manager at M&S was a proper Spice Boy and used to sign off our morning briefings by saying ‘fank oooooo’ shudders

we do the stand-up thing. i find it quite useful if you have dependencies or need guidance on something. but maybe i’ve been brainwashed.
