There’s a good TV show on iPlayer right now if you can get it, about Gothic Literature. The early 1800s section covers the explosion. The miserable weather and freakish light conditions for the year afterwards lead to things like the writing of Frankenstein.

I did know this. We studied it at school but it was only recently I was reading HOW they worked out how loud it was and about the winds going round the earth 6 times or whatever. But for the life of me I cannot recall what I was reading or listening to that caused me to look it all up.

Anyway, truly spectacular.
