Ah, man, I loved it. It was in my ‘to watch’ pile for months but the running time and fact it looked really Russian and serious put me off. But it was excellent. Very funny in places.

I loved Force Majeure, thought it was brilliant.

anyone seen the original version of the Beguiled?

I liked Force Majeure but Im still baffled how anyone can see it as a comedy. My Synedochr New York dvd ( awful film) brands that as the comedy of the year too

There’s an element of the Shakespeare’s Tongue to the people who champion it as some comedic masterpiece.

Yeah. Although I did chuckle when he bolts during the avalanche. Pure Partridge.

Saw the Studio Ghibli produced film, The Red Turtle, last night and really enjoyed it. The first half was absolutely perfect, but unfortunately didn’t stay that way all the way through for me, but it was still very good and beautiful.

Lady Macbeth - loved it. Straight into my top few picks for favourite of the year. At first I was worried that the pace of it was a little too fast but it actually became really enjoyable - the way that the power dynamics seemed to change drastically every fifteen minutes or so. Felt really confidentially made.

Loved the (should this even be spoiler tagged?) swell of music in the last scene. It’s mentioned upthread, but the sound design of the whole thing is really great. The creaks and footsteps and other bits of ambient stuff all merge into one, and you end up focusing on all them because of how silent everything else is.

Only unfortunate thing was the cinema we saw it in was filled with pricks. Early on a lad who was either autistic/had learning disabilities started talking to himself, and it seemed like some people in the audience thought he was drunk/didn’t care he was disabled??

Anyways they shushed him a few times and of course he kept talking and then he left when it seemed like people were getting more irate with him. One of those very awkward situations but shame on those people and their shitty behaviour. Not sure who I can appropriately vent this stuff towards. Me and the partner were sat away from everyone else, so we couldn’t say to the shushers to chill out. Getting in a shouting match across the room didn’t seem right either. Feel bad for not doing more at the time.

I mean… it seemed to me to be intended as a black comedy. Wasnt funny, mind.

Glad you liked it. I have to admit I think I’m still a little bit traumatised. That has to be one of the most harrowing scenes I’ve ever watched. Fuck. The way he wakes up and tries to cuddle her and asks her what’s wrong and he’s in that state because she rejected him before he ran away and fuck. It just ripped my heart, my brain and my soul to pieces.
What an amazing and horrible film.

Shame about the pricks at your showing. Not sure what you could have done really.

I liked the animation but would’ve preferred it if the turtle wasn’t a person.

Same!

is this a massive spoiler?

t happens not very long into the film, so I don’t think so.

Spoilers don’t have to come at the end of the film, pi!

Oh well, doesn’t matter.

Sicario - I really loved the first 45 minutes/an hour which were fantastic, but then steadily went off the rails. Emily Blunt’s character felt like a massive missed opportunity. The moment it lost it for me is when Benicio Del Toro saves her from being strangled. After that it became the Benicio Del Toro show (though he was good) and her character just sort of goes nowhere. Really frustrating film by the end and I was quite dissapointed. Great score though.

Trainspotting 2 - It was fine. Some of the editing/imagery (e.g. george best on the side of the car, scenes being projected onto wallpaper) was fantastic. Have some pretty big issues with it though. Begbie’s plot was far too daft escaping from prison that way, and then never hiding from the police and I can’t articulate why but Spud’s writing storyline hacked me off a bit too. Though it could have been loads worse, it did feel like a sequel in some bad ways. Some really fantastic shots in it though, particularly the last one. Also as much as I like Young Fathers, I think they used a couple too many of their tracks and it was a bit distracting.

guys I finally saw High Rise and, as a book wanker, it made me pretty angry

I watched Mr Smith Goes to Washington, The Hitch-Hiker and Sugar Mountain

aiiiii

Watched Mulholland Drive and Wild at Heart recently.
Might watch Lost Highway tonight if its not too scary… I’m not particularly fond of horror movies.

In saying that, Mulholland Drive was pretty great, and actually used a good jump scare in that scene! I wonder if the TV show would have been any good… sometimes the stuff is more interesting unresolved.

Wild at Heart was the only film I remember seeing where Nicolas Cage was actually good. Last few minutes were probably unnecessary, but all the same it was a good movie. The fucking dancing to the heavy metal did me a goodun. Why did he decide to incorporate heavy metal into the film?

Might try and convince the gf to watch the Straight Story by saying it’s a disney movie. Still haven’t watched eraserhead.

i thought Spud’s thing seemed like a really clumsy way of calling back to the first film, and the film in general seemed way too ‘hey, remember when that happened in the last film?’. but it was no doubt by design and it ties into certain themes they were going for, so heyho

agreed that Sicario doesn’t sustain the excellent first hour or so, but i wouldn’t be as overall disappointed as you were

The Straight Story was great, and it probably could pass for a Disney movie.
