The 2017 Film DiScussion Thread

Goodnight Mommy

was the “twist” actually supposed to be one? Because if so it was genuinely the worst kept one of all time. That aside, it was genuinely very creepy until the torture porn happened. Then it was just disgusting and not in any way good. Shame.

thought it was decent

How does it rate against the other DC films?

Anyone seen Hounds of Love? On my watchlist. Might give it a go this week.

Out here early July I think

I’m just going to watch it at home.

My Life as a Courgette- I knew I would love this and I did. The animation was so good and the few people in the cinema laughed throughout the film.

Yep. Really dull and adds nothing to the genre. Fuck knows how its got such high ratings

Watched Virgins Bed last nigbt too, laughs galore

After the Storm - Hirokazu Kore-Eda is one of my favourite directors and as always it’s another great film from him.

Saw 20th Century Women tonight as it’s only out in Germany now, thought it was beautiful, poignant and well crafted, plus what a soundtrack

They freaked me the fuck out… I really dislike watching horror movies though. While watching some 2010 jump scare stuff I pulled a muscle in my leg from jumping so hard.

Finally watched Apocalypse Now. I’m 42, but it’s eluded me all this time. However, it’s one of those films where I know the key scenes and how it pans out generally. Probably doesn’t need saying, but it’s as good as all the hype. The scene where he finds Kurtz is a masterclass, the sound, the light and so on, it’s amazing.

Redux version or standard one, out of interest?

Redux. I knew when I researched the versions that some people think scenes like the French plantation are not really needed, but I wanted to see the whole thing.

Noted. Cheers.

Well that is admirable. I saw that one in the cinema and I was glad I did because at that length it’s easy to be distracted at home.

some of the scenes in the Redux (including the classic Charlie don’t surf bit) use different takes, so it’s pretty disorientating if you are used to the original

I prefer the original for what it’s worth - although the plantation scene is interesting to watch

Wonder Woman

First 20 minutes - pretty ropey
Last half hour - pretty ropey
Everything in between - pretty good

The scenes with Chris Pine and Gal Gadot are delightful, especially any of the stuff in London which had a lot of funny moments. I wish there’d been more of Lucy Davis and the rest of the team who go on the mission to the Western Front.

Apocalypse Now is one of those films that still has a.mythical feel I think but its so worth it. The opening acene of Martin Sheen genuinely hammered sets the tone. Such an odd film but amazing
