The 2023 DIS album of the year - RESULTS

oh I almost forgot (shambles) here’s yer damn playlist!

As that Rat band definitely doesn’t exist I took the liberty of putting two Militarie Gun songs on there (they’re only short!)

I completely forgot to vote, so I’m pleased to see the right album got first place anyway :1st_place_medal:

Was first for me since about the end of Feb, going higher with every time I saw them live. Just about a perfect encapsulation of what they are about, with some moments of pure distilled joy that are truly worth treasuring

Maps also finally made billy click for me so I’m excited to dive into that back catalogue now (and spoilers he’s gonna win the rap AOTY vote too)

Yeah hearing an entire Roundhouse singing along to Geronimo was probably my favourite live music experience of the year

Be interesting to see whereabouts Slowdive comes in the breakdown. Probably one that a lot of people voted for but didn’t put as number 1. It’s a flaw in the system but how you get it fairer than it is I have absolutely no clue

Lovely work I think we can all agree from @Severed799

Here’s the list … I’ll take it down to the top 80ish …

Wasn’t the only one then who voted for this

The scores are made using the tried and tested system of 5 points for an album in 1st place down to 1 point for those in 5th place. We had 161 contributors (very similar to last year when we had 162), and 362 albums mentioned (it was 356 last year) which is a new record in the 10 years I’ve been doing this.

1 x 1st place & 1 x 3rd place.

Can we have my two favourite stats please (album that got the most votes without being anyone’s favourite and album(s) that only got 5 points but all those points came from 1 person)?

Very happy to see that my typo (the band are called ‘Melenas’, not ‘Melanas’) did not affect the result.

If you take the number of lists that Slowdive features in they’d still finish in 3rd position. Some years there is a big flux in the list if you order by the number of people who voted for an album (rather than do the scores). But not so much this year. Young Fathers wholloped the opposition any way you slice the data. Caroline P goes up a few places. Boygenius go down a few places. Home Is Where smash into the top 25.

I’m playing football at 6pm so going to have to dash. Will pop back later to answer these (and any other q’s). And, of course, award the Adebishi Shank award (of which there is a clear and undisputed winner this year).

Great thread and I think by now everyone is aware that there is a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard.

The lack of love for Jessy Lanza is unforgivable.

Great record, but you only get 5 picks!

I really like that record, but not sure she’s made a great one since her 1st. I’m at the point with her where I know pretty much exactly what it’s gonna be and I’m like & it’s good, but it’s another Jessy Lanza record.

Think I just wish she’d push the boat out a bit sound-wise, because she’s got another all timer in her for sure.

Surprised The Lemon Twigs didn’t sneak in.
