The 2026 Winter Wrestling Thread! ft. WK20! Saudi Rumble and the continued descent into hell! AEW Revolution! And more!

Happy New Year Graps Fans!

Well 2025 is over, let us never speak of it again. WWE ruined 2-3 years of general goodwill to (re?)reveal themselves as the evil megalomaniac villans we all knew them to be with a largely terrible year of creative, extortionate ticket prices, relentless advertising and associations with fascists and blood thirsty royal families.

AEW had a generally much improved year, not perfect but certainly a huge improvement on 2024 (in the second half of the year at least) and while still don’t have the numbers they’d like are proving themselves as largely clean-conscious alternative.

NJPW meanwhile had a solid if unspectacular year, as they gear up to not repeat WWE’s mistakes in booking the final retirement match of their biggest star of the last 25 years with… a thoroughly odd card for their biggest show of the year.

You like multi-man matches to get everyone on the card?! Well do I have a show for you. There’s no doubt I’m sure that WK20 will still be a great show, but it really says a lot about the lack of real feuds or story-lines when there’s only four single matches including giving a huge spot to the largely unproven (but intriguing) Olympic Gold Judo winning Aaron Wolf against, lol, EVIL. Still the womens match (shamefully low on the card, despite the top billing on the poster) should be great, Tsuji surely gets his moment as the true next top star and a no doubt emotional war between Okada and the boots-hanging Hiorshi Tanahashi. Also, nice to see Black Country (New Road)'s finest Chris Brookes get an opportunity on Japan’s biggest stage in the opener.

Over in America, as things currently stand WWE have only booked as far as the 1 year Netflix anniversary for RAW on Monday featuring CM Punk putting his title on the line against Bron Brekker, but there is a Saturday Night’s Main Event to come before what normally would be the most exciting night of the year at the Royal Rumble, but will require some real moral judgement being the first big step towards the Saudi’s throwing their power and influence around. Still, at least it will be on at a very convenient time for the UK…

AEW’s next big show is Revolution, which is not until March, but I’m sure someone who follows them week to week will be along to inform us on what to expect in the meantime (sorry lads). What I will say though is, I stan the Mina Shirakawa, Orange Cassidy, Toni Storm thruple.

Alright let’s do it, to it! Wrestling that is.

God that Rambo is sad, so much young talent plus the guy who has carried the company for the last year and a bit squabbling over the fucking trios titles.

Stray thought I’ve just had, Will Ospreay posted on IG about “not missing Tanahashi’s last match for the world” so… could he be rejoining United Empire as the surprise mystery man? Surely he must be near returning by now??

Have never been less hyped for a Rumble. Zero intrigue. Actually quite impressive how quickly WWE have dismantled their great run from a couple of years ago.

Insane isn’t it, they’ve amassed a huge new audience over the last year with the Netflix deal and have seemed hellbent to destroy that goodwill at every possible turn since

Im sure the Rumble will be greatly improved by Jericho turning up on Monday

I get the thinking behind the Wrestle Kingdom card. They’re on easily accessible telly for the first time in a long time and have sold the dome out for the first time in nearly 30 years. This is a card for the casual or prospective Japanese fan. A whistle stop tour through the stuff you can expect at a New Japan show culminating in what surely must be the crowning of one of their young prospective stars and the final curtain for one of the most beloved stars of all time. New Year’s Dash is the show for the sickos where the actual story stuff continues this year.

So it’s a weird one for anyone following New Japan. It’ll be an emotional spectacle and cramming all that talent into the trios clusterfuck should be entertaining. Might be a fun one for anyone who fancies dipping their toe in the New Japan water.

I didn’t know this one was being broadcast on japanese TV/didn’t know it hadn’t been for so long (delete as appropriate)

The 2 big bouts are worth admission fee alone. Takeshitas new japan / aew booking isnt meshing well but bah gawd he’ll turn out a banger reliable as it comes.
Then the pageantry of Tana, even with both fellas in 2nd gear is bound to be a spectacle. He moves better than Hogan could at Mania 2002, no reason it cant be similar vibes in the dome.

I’m pretty sure Ospreay is still a good while off. Tony said in his Helwani interview recently he was hoping for the first half of 2026 for him to come back. Granted we’re in the first half of 2026 now but I can’t see it

Pretty sure my half remembered podcast info is sound there. It’s a a truncated card to fill the slot too.

Hang on… there’s 10 matches in the OP by my count. How long exactly is it normally?

There’s 8 matches I think - couple on the main image are duplicated in the ones below. Usually it’s around 10, yeah. Tanahashi’s retirement ceremony will take up some time too so I’m not sure how much shorter it’ll actually be.

Yeah i added those two extra graphics because they are just words without faces on the main poster

(But usually about 4 hours, the first few matches will fly by and then it will go deep in the main matches)

Wonder if I’ll watch more or less wrestling this year. I’ve watched so little since Summerslam and had no real desire to watch anything wrestling related outside of the OSW reviews I’ve never watched.
