The '59 Sound by The Gaslight Anthem

Yeah great album and as everyone else is saying so is American Slang.

Tbh all their albums are good but perhaps suffer from just being more of the same, but sometimes that’s all you want.

The reformation album is good and is a free download as they didn’t like the way the original mix sounded digitally so they remixed it (and it sounds better) and gave it away for free:

Also really like this one from one of their early EPs

Didn’t know they’d remixed the most recent album. I did think it sounded quite muted, so I’ll try that new mix out.

Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts is a great song.

The new mix is much much better. It’s probably their third best now.

Worth mentioning as well that Brian Fallon seems like an absolute champ of a guy.

YouTube always throws this Letterman version of that at me. Quite glad of it too, good rendition.

Airborne Toxic Event were better

Set list killed me and my crew, we buggered off before the encore - may or may not have been a mistake. Saw him a couple of years later and he was incredible. Very very different shows.

except on stage!

There are ways to reference other songs and songwriters that are clever, funny, affectionate, or interesting. And then there is Brian Fallon singing “no surrender, my bobbbyyy jeeeean” on this, while he wildly points at the Springsteen section of your record collection.

Gotta hand it to the rest off the band though, they can bash out a lot of good tunes.

“At night i wake up with the sheets soaking wet
It’s a pretty good song, baby you know the rest” is a good line though.

hmm I think it’s acceptable on that specific song, that’s practically 100% borrowed or rephrased more famous songs, just to illustrate how much of a facsimile the protagonist is

That’s the beauty of it though, it’s a bunch of guys playing New Jersey toilets desperately wanting to be Bruce and self actualising it.

Think i’d argue that Bruce never made a record better than The '59 Sound.

And I’m a Brucey man.

This. See also Microwave’s Death is a Warm Blanket. Tried their other stuff and it sounds meh compared to DIAWB.

I’m a big fan of this folk-punk song that does the same thing back to them by borrowing half the lyrics to The Backseat:
