The 98th Academy Awards - 15th March 2026

Oh I’m not commenting on the performances or who was stronger in the category. I was just wondering if there might be a reason why they surprisingly nominated 10 leading performances in lead and 10 supporting performances in supporting for the first time in ages, with the only 3 actors people have been talking about all year as being in the wrong categories (as I said, I don’t care about this) being the ones that missed. I don’t believe for a second that voters think like this, and at any rate, it’s the studios and distributors that usually decides what categories they campaign in anyway (apart from Lakeith Stanfield but that was a weird year all round so who knows what went on).

Anyway, doing the Oscars Death Race has led to me watching fucking Jurassic World: Rebirth so obviously my mind has gone.

I remember my parents watching that when it was on, Webber was obsessed with Buckley, I guess he does know talent when he sees it.

Had a similar thing in Germany as @nicholasurfe is describing, I remember the Swedish/Danish sections in ‘The Square’ by Östlund being quite a challenge having to then decipher the German subtitles (I think I largely survived but in that case it’s the benefit of being similarly nordic languages)

when Game of Thrones was ending I was in Berlin for work, so I was watching it on HBO, in English with German subtitles. the penultimate episode features a long speech by the main Dragon Lady in which she goes full mask-off villain, except it was delivered in High Valyrian with German subtitles, so to this day I stlil have no idea what she was saying

The first time I saw Carol (2015, dir. Todd Haynes) it was when I was living in Madrid and it was dubbed into Spanish. I do speak Spanish but found it an odd experience.

state of play ahead of the Oscars in two weeks

Picture - One Battle After Another is very likely to win, but Sinners probably has 10-20% chance of an upset
Director - Paul Thomas Anderson is winning
Actor - coin toss between Michael B Jordan and Timothee Chalamet with Jordan as slight favourite
Actress - Jessie Buckley is winning
Supporting Actor - feels like things are tilting towards Sean Penn now
Supporting Actress - total crapshoot between Amy Madigan, Wunmi Mosaku and Teyana Taylor
Original Screenplay - Sinners is winning
Adapted Screenplay - One Battle After Another is winning

I reckon Delroy Lindo might swoop in on the Supporting Actor front

It’s possible, it’s rare but not unheard of for someone to win an acting Oscar having won no precursors (and Penn/Del Toro might split the OBAA vote) but feels like Penn bagging two major awards over the last week or so puts him in a strong position

I think Penn and Del Toro splitting the preferential ballot is on the cards, I also think that the events of the BAFTA might boost both Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo’s chances with people who were undecided

Might watch OBAA again, del Toro was so much fun

That’s a shame. Hopefully Delroy will pip him

Traditionalists will bemoan it, but imho this will add some much needed excitement for the audience on the night
