The Bear (Disney+) - please use spoilers with episode/season number note

Just finished it. Lovely stuff, don’t think they need another series but what do I know. Having said that

Only watched the first two.

“Uncle Computer” is still living rent free in my head. Incredible how this show can come up with stuff like that. Like “non negotiables” last season.

The whole bit soundtracked by Talk Talk was great but I was almost crying with laughter at the apples segment. Just incredible acting from both of them.

Finished season 4 tonight. My thoughts, which I’m sure you’re all desperate to hear.

Summary

Definitely a huge step up from season 3, though in some ways, it’s made me resent season 3 even more for being so interminable and navel gazing. Imagine if they’d done a proper season what this one could have been. What a waste!

Lots of huge positives. Fantastic performances from the usual people. Very solid scripts. Lots of nice moments. Last episode was fantastic.

But still a few misfires. I hate the self-indulgent “restaurants are magic” crap it occasionally lapsed into again. I thought Syd’s dad getting sick felt like an uninspired retread of Marcus’s mum. And I’m not sure if I liked the wedding episode that much. Fishes was the all time peak for me. I get that this was the happy ying to that miserable yang but it didn’t pop in the same way.

There was just about the right level of Faks throughout though, so credit for that.

One more season to wrap it up with Carm handing over the reins feels appropriate, don’t think it needs to go longer than that though.

  • You don’t need to watch Season 3 if you enjoyed 1 & 2 and want to skip to 4
  • You can never have enough Bear, watch Season 3 first you five-****ed goat.

Season 3 would probably seem a lot better if you can go straight into 4 afterwards, it just felt a bit insubstantial on its own. There’s some really good episodes/bits in it

“Ice chips” is a top 3 episode across the whole 4 seasons for me. Incredible stuff imo

Napkins is really good as well.

Couple things I didn’t understand was why Ebra didn’t make any attempt to let management know that he was consulting with Rob Reiner, and that the take out sandwich bit could finance Carmy’s art cuisine bullshit if they franchise it. That seems like the kind of information you would share immediately. Also was Ebra was paying Rob Reiner? Where would he get the money/why would Rob consult for free? Or maybe there was a scene where Ebra did tel Carmy but afaik the first time the franchising point gets raised is between Rob Reiner and Uncle Computer.

As I recall

— the sandwich bit was financing the whole restaurant anyway, which everyone was aware of
—They only properly hit on the franchise idea in the last episode or so, so no need to say anything before then?
— he said at one point that Computer had given him the figures, so guessing he could assume management (ie Cicero) was aware he was trying to develop/grow the sandwich bit. He definitely talked to Tina about it at one point I think
— he has a job and presumably a bit of money, guess he could splash out on some advice from Reiner?
— Carmy locks himself in fridges and talks to people in an oddly non-distinct manner, he quite rightly thought there was no point in letting him know until there was something to tell him

I don’t know why but I thought the sandwich suggestion was first made 3 or 4 episodes before the scene in the parkibg lot with RR and UC

Yeah I had a sinking feeling the whole way through that Ebra was going to get scammed or something, so glad that didn’t come to pass.

Other big “plot hole” or immersion breaker for me was Richie hiring Jessica and the two lads from Ever. They’re literally some of the best hospitality staff in the world, fresh from one of the world’s best restaurants, how is their failing restaurant with a two month budget affording them? Are they doing it pro bono like Luca?

The quality of this season has cemented my opinion that when they ordered a fourth season, the writers just padded out the one season worth of episodes they had into two, thankfully it seems most of the padding went into S3. but like you said, it makes that season even worse by comparison. smart decision I think, instead of making to bang average seasons

Syd’s dad getting sick

just from a writing perspective it feels a bit heavy-handed.
