It’s a real chicken and egg thing tbh. Developments like that get built because people want a house with a garden, and delivering homes at the densities that allow that come with sacrifices.

But also a lot of people live in them because they’re most of what is available.

Also worth pointing out there are a lot of places with high public transport mobility and good walkability where car ownership is still really high. Places like outer London, innet Edinburgh, the West End of Glasgow, most city centres where residential populations have exploded in the last 25 years. There’s little need to own a car in these places but lots of people still do.

It’s a complex thing that can’t be explained by easy assumptions in either direction tbh

took 2 small children on a bus in the rain to a shopping centre on the weekend while the car as in the garage. Gonna get a second car for the few days a year where the other one is out of action

I had an accident a couple of years ago on which I misjudged a corner (sun was very bright), and being inexperienced, I didn’t slow down to an appropriate speed. I flipped over a couple of times. Luckily another car wasn’t involved, but it could have very easily been the case and someone could have been seriously hurt or killed.

Should I be eliminated from society?

I learned and became a better driver. And if another car has been involved maybe I would have faced some kind of prosecution idk. But prison?

Most everyone will have had some kind of moment where they have accidentally done something that could have seriously harmed someone.

We are addicted to cars. We live in a world where it is increasingly difficult to live without them. To some they are a luxury, to some a convenience, to many they are essential.

Same sort of level as eating meat, going on city breaks, buying sweat shop clothes and all that sort of stuff most of us do every day.

Selfish doesn’t necessarily mean unforgivably heinous.

not trolling, i just don’t see what the distinction is here? At least, a prison should be a high security residential centre. There should be work, education, health and social care provision, frequent familial visitation etc. I appreciate that in many ways our prison system has ended up a long way from that, but there’s still a case for prisons/secure facilities for criminals who are a risk to others or themselves.

Just abandoned a similar reply as you have beaten me to it. I don’t think anyone in this thread would defend the prison system as it stands, and it is clearly in need of major overhaul, if not rebuilding from the ground up.

Thank you - I follow a few people on twitter too (prisonculture being one that springs to mind), but as you say a lot is US centric (I guess they have a different / larger issue than over here).
