My local foodbank isn’t open at any time during non working hours. But my local Co-op store takes items and delivers them to the foodbank.

Will see if I can do this here! Cracking idea!

I did this on the way home this morning. Went to the town centre Sainsbury’s. Not the cheapest option but a lot of people use it because it’s convenient and right next to the bus stop

I was wrong about the cereal. £1.40 for a box of own brand cornflakes but I reckon that’s more expensive than average

Bit of a discount on the old deodorant

And here’s the full basket:

Which came to:

£11.45 for the lot. Reckon I paid a premium for shopping somewhere convenient rather than at a big out of town store.

£8.63 on Asda online. Could probably have got it down a little bit further too if I tried. Might just add this to every shop and make a habit of it.

Just noticed on that Trussell website that if you find the page for a local foodbank they can advertise for things they specifically need, and things they have enough of:

https://thewhitehawk.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-food/

Might swap out my tinned food and add a few more toiletries.

Probs going to do this regularly now. :+1:

Not much choice of offers, so price probs could’ve been lower.

Right I did mine with a few additional rules/game elements:

1. Buy a multipack option of the thing where possible
2. Go to an unfamiliar supermarket and time how long it takes you to complete the shop
3. Buy the version of the thing you would buy if you were getting it for yourself

These rules were surprisingly difficult to follow frankly, the only multipack option was the juice and non-own brand versions were difficult to find (especially for the canned goods weirdly)

That said all of that might have been down to my choice of unfamiliar supermarket which was the Angel branch of Waitrose, not a big branch but not an Express/Local equivalent

With that in mind here is the result of my shop:

Pleasingly this branch had a drop off for the Harringay borough which is where my gf works in a very impoverished school so hopefully it gets to the right places

I managed to navigate the unfamiliar supermarket fairly well with only the tinned fruit proving to be a real struggle and clocked in with a sub-10 minute time

Jobs a good’un

Damn! I really wish I’d timed my run now.

Rice Pudding was my tricky item.

I thought it was nailed on for an Ambrosia option but alas, no.

Tell you what though, it took me about 15 minutes and I spent less than £12. Dropped it in the box at the supermarket and all done.

I could easily do this every week.

I went branded for corn flakes, tea bags, deodorant and tampax.

Took me a little while to find the rice pudding (can never quite remember where stuff like that is). But yeah, should really do this more often, took no time at all.

You know what else I was thinking - supermarket websites should let you fill a basket and send it direct to a foodbank.

Do any already do this?

Definitely going to do this later in the week. Toothbrushes and Toothpaste are needed by my local foodbank, so may add those

It’s a really good question. I think it’s been mooted but I don’t think they do.

I’ll do this tonight, probably at Waitrose where they have a Haringey foodbank box.

(I usually only give feminine hygiene products every month so will be adding on some bits)

Erm, the thread says “by Monday afternoon”

Sort it out, mate.

I am going to try do this Wednesday* if there is a drop off at my local Asda, if not I can’t actually get to my local food bank in the time available unfortunately.

I was thinking about what me and R would need if we had to use a food bank, so I hope to add to the above list with the single mum+toddler special:
-full fat UHT milk (under 2’s need the extra fat)
-baby/childrens toothbrush and toothpaste
-adult toothbrush and toothpaste
-not an addition, but getting women’s deodorant

Also, I don’t know if people are considering this when buying their tinned fruit, but fruit in juice is far healthier for teeth so probably a better option.

*I know there is a deadline in the thread, but I can’t get to do it by then.
