Yep, in my list I had Satoshi Kon at around 8th place. Perfect Blue and Paprika I

Fargo number 1, Barton Fink number 2

love the Coens, would have been my number 1. think Intolerable Cruelty is the only on of theirs i haven’t seen. might have only seen part of The Ladykillers as well actually.

don’t really like True Grit though.

Really enjoy Intolerable Cruelty - proper screwball comedy. Got a bit of a lukewarm reception on release which I’ve always felt was a bit down to folk having issues with CZJ (she’s very funny in it :woman_shrugging:)…

Obviously this is the actual best scene

ā€œSomeone sits on the shore and tells him how the waves have been there long before Bill existed, and that they’d still be there long after he’s gone. Bill looks out at the water and thinks of all the wonderful things he will do with his life.ā€

I put Don Hertzfeld in 11th place and never expected him to make the big 75, but I’ll happily use this idea to shout about his wonderful animations, specifically ā€˜It’s Such A Beautiful Day’. It’s formed of three shorts merged into one feature, and utilises his misleadingly simple looking animation style. We follow idiosyncratic stick figure Bill as he suffers a breakdown, his memories fade and his health deteriorates. Ideas on memory, loneliness and time are explored in both minute and grandiose ways, via the transcendental.

Darkly comic and wonderfully absurd ā€˜It’s Such A Beautiful Day’ deals with more ideas in its hour duration than most directors manage across their entire filmography. Profound, heartbreaking and philosophical in equal measures, it’s one of (if not the) finest explorations of the human condition captured in any medium. Friends have found it depressing but by the end I find it an incredibly life affirming experience, and a film of great beauty.

You can rent it for Ā£2.88 on Vimeo, and I couldn’t recommend it more: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/itssuchabeautifulday

I did but then changed it to the return which isn’t even a film.

La Jetee is good IMO

More of a slideshow tbf

I imagine there must be some good ones but even Wes Anderson’s short film doesn’t do anything for me even though it won awards and stuff

I had Cat People in mind as well, but Night Of The Demon in particular is superb

Zhang Yimou was fourth in mine. I’ve never seen a film of his where the visuals are less than stellar.

Some great courtroom stuff in Intolerable Cruelty, always thought it was an underrated film. Pretty lightweight, but very enjoyable.

Part is probably enough tbh

Fair. Slideshow chris

I know you don’t really mean it, but seems like a good excuse for me to post 5 wonderful fairly recent animated short films. All ~15 mins or less!

All very obvious picks if you know your indie animation, but always worth a rewatch!

Please Say Something - David OReilly (2008)
The Burden - Niki Lindroth von Bahr (2017) - only available VOD, but seriously worth it.
The Eagleman Stag - Mikey Please (2011)
Scavengers - Joseph Bennett, Charles Huettner (2016)
The Making Of Longbird - Will Anderson (2011)

I’m going to rewatch one of my faves that I’ve not seen in forever

What’s that then?!
