Like 90% of it is someone making something out of nothing and making real progress
And then 10% of it is fucking horrendous

Land And Freedom by a mile for me, Clive. The bit at the end where Ian Hart’s granddaughter steps back from the coffin and gives the clenched fist salute gets me every time.

Sorry but he’s my number 2

He’s made around a dozen films that I adore. And some of the worst shite I’ve ever seen, but when he’s good he’s very very good.

Very surprised people voted for him tbh.

Fuck the man. Unfortunately made some undeniably great films but fuck him.

fucking who put this in

Didn’t vote for him, but Annie Hall and Manhattan are very funny.

Shame he’s an awful cunt.

I gave him 19 points so you can probably blame me for this one

L&F is a masterclass. Really need to see it again.

Just the old separating art from the artist debate I guess. If I was making a list of my top 50 music artists then The Smiths, Michael Jackson, The Beatles would all be in there, same goes for directors. Maybe I’m just drawn to utter bastards, idk.

i mean my whole problem with him is he is completely inseparable from his art by its very nature

Yeah I get that too… not sure I could ever watch Manhattan again for instance. I’m just a total sucker for dialogue driven films about pretentious people, it’s catnip for me.

I loved Annie Hall but given what I read about Manhattan I can’t really bring myself to watch that one. Midnight in Paris was pretty sweet too, might have been obvious targets but one of the best take-downs of ā€œthings used to be better in my dayā€ I’ve seen

If you removed Woody Allen from making Manhattan and had someone else make a romantic comedy with:

Gershwin soundtrack
Gordon Willis cinematography
Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep

you’d have a better film than the one that got made.

purple rose of cairo and radio days I liked.

purple rose of cairo is good and probs one of hist least woody alleny films
used to love stardust memories but dunno if i could rewatch it, same with manhattan
annie hall’s overrated anyway

Have you seen anything by Whit Stillman? Feel like they’d be right up your street - I loved Love & Friendship and Metropolitan, and plan to watch Last Days of Disco soon.
