Reckon this is a film that rewards knowing as little as possible going into it, I knew basically nothing before watching it yesterday and think I probably enjoyed it more, so worthy of it’s own thread imo. Although contradicting that completely, still think you could enjoy it a lot if you knew more about it.
I liked it. Very funny. My cinema had people cackling and gasping which I liked. I was hoping for a more interesting ending.
Did it feel like the soundtrack was weirdly Spotify algorithm’d? I’m sure every song in it has been in my discover weekly at some point. My friend disagreed but I think I have a point
Little bit of Judee Sill in there almost made me nudge my pal cause I’ve been obsessed with that particular song for a while
I really enjoyed it (even though the fucking Guardian partially ruined the twist in a FUCKING HEADLINE). I saw it at my favourite place in Birmingham and got a slice of wedding cake for opening night
Going tomorrow, cannot wait. I’ve been desperate to watch it as soon as I saw promo a few months back. Can only hope it is a better viewing experience than my last Zendaya cinematic outing (Challengers. absolute wank. I have never resented paying £10 for a taxi home more.)
“Don’t mind” is a bit silly maybe but… she didn’t actually do anything!! I’d be more upset that my partner was ever in a mental state that made that a possibility and I’d feel worried for them
Gonna spoiler all of it, we just left the cinema though so this is FRESH
Summary
I feel like my reaction would be much more, ‘are you okay, you must have been so unhappy and isolated to have felt like that’ to the extent that I can’t imagine the other side of it?? But also, with the title, I feel like it was RPattz getting swept up in ALANA’s drama with ‘omg you know my cousin got shot’ and blowing it up when her thing was objectively much worse and actually caused harm. Watched the whole start just like, hold the fucking phone here, but I guess that’s the point because I think it was just about Pattz being spineless and not knowing how to react/not wanting to be contrary to the popular opinion
yeah this was my whole thing as well, like surely the fact that your partner was so desperately unhappy as a child and you had no idea is the thing you should be focused on. I generally thought that there was a running thread of them trying to live this yuppie on-rails life and the perfect wedding and so much of their relationship was false that it got toppled very easily. sort of liked the ending of them starting over again but this time having a real look at each other rather than pretending to have read a book, but like thinking about it for two seconds surely if you have such a spectacular meltdown of a wedding in the presence of all your family and friends then there’s no way you can actually continue that relationship.
couldn’t cope with how stressful it was in lots of places, but in a good way. kind of obsessed with the diva who just hoiked up her skirt and turned round the second R Patz got his hands on her. her screaming “use your words” right after the headbutt was the line of the film for me as well
also lowkey made me very thankful how well we got on with all our wedding vendors. the scenes with the photographer were excruciating
yeah this took me out like 2 hours before we got to the film and I was deeeeeeeeply pissed off at the time, but actually found that it didn’t detract from the film at all, and I think it would’ve been fine for them to put it in the trailers and stuff, but keeping it out of the marketing is just really good and effective promo, gotta admit. there being this secret that I wanted not to be spoiled is how I ended up driving us and hour each way to the very expensive cinema on a gross hangover in a storm rather than just waiting a week
the film shines a light on how the United States of America is an interesting country of contrasts; on one hand they have a culture of guns and frequent mass shootings which I do think is bad and I’m glad we don’t have this in the UK, but on the other they have all night diners where you can go and get a cheeseburger and a cola at 2am and I would definitely want that for us
one thing that squicks me out very bad is seeing people vomiting, so I was glad that the vomit scenes were brief and not gratuitously disgusting. impressive filmmaking to thread the needle so that a vomit fan and a vomit hater both walk out satisfied!
