The Drowned in Sound Community Game of the Year 2023 RESULTS START POST 50 🎮

Hello. The last time someone tried this, in 2019, it got one set of best games, from the person who started the thread. Let’s hope that this doesn’t happen again!

Time to determine what is the Drowned in Sound “Best Video Game” of 2023

The way that this will work is familiar, so here are the rules.

Pick five games that you consider to be the best of the year 2023, and a sixth for on-going game. See note below!
List them 1 to 5, with the scoring being as follows:

  1. 7 points
  2. 5 points
  3. 3 points
  4. 2 points
  5. 1 point
  6. Favourite on-going game

Once everyone has voted I will total them up and crown five games based on the results.

  1. Best over all ranked game (game with the most points)
  2. Best Xbox exclusive game (game released on Xbox/PC only) with most points
  3. Best PlayStation exclusive game (game released on PlayStation 5 or PSVR2 only) with most points
  4. Best Nintendo Switch exclusive game (game released on Nintendo Switch only) with most points
  5. Most nominated game (with the most voted entries, not necessarily the highest score)

Note!
For completeness, a sixth game should be nominated in position 6, which is “best live service/on going game”. You pick what you think that means, see eligibility below. If your best on-going game was also released in 2023, remember to place it twice, once in the top five (in the position for 2023) and in sixth place to be counted for on-going title. Just to be clear it does not have to have been released in 2023.

Eligibility rules

  • the game must have been released at somepoint between 1st January 2023 and the end of voting.
  • all releases count, including expansions, remasters, remakes, and ports to a new platform
  • on-going games could be anything, from Overwatch 2 to OpenRCT2. You chose.
  • Voting starts today, 8th December 2023, and ends on 24th December 2023, with results in the dead zone between Christmas and new year.

I will vote publically for my own in this thread and once all votes are counted the spreadsheet will be shared for transparency.

Please please please use the format 1 to 6! It will make my tallying of the scores a lot easier.

This thread can be used for the voting and for chat as I don’t expect it to get the number of votes as the albums thread.

  5. Football manager 24
  6. Overwatch 2

This is always tough given my tastes, lack of access to big hitters and not playing much in the right year, but got a couple this time.

  1. Tears of the Kingdom
  2. Super Mario Wonder
  3. Vampire Survivors (Switch)
  4. F Zero 99
  5. FM Mobile 24
  6. Minecraft
  1. Resident Evil 4
  2. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
  3. Spider Man 2
  4. Venba
  5. Star Trek Resurgence

Biggest disappointment was FF16 but I enjoyed a lot of it. Octopath Traveller 2 also deserves a nod.

Edit: changed this

Also Alan Wake 2 is fucking rubbish

Ridiculous year, rated all of these 9 in Games Completed thread. Top 3 would all take the lead any other year. Resi I’ve gone for the pure 15 hour concentrated blast of joy (might actually be a 10 thinking about it), but TotK is just incredibly stuffed and satisfying, and Baldur’s Gate is wholly unparalleled (but broken).

Three top ones could have come in any order really, far and away the best things I played this year. Can’t believe Midnight Suns beat Starfield, but here we are.

Moment of the year: (huge TotK spoiler):

Runner up - Resi 4 remake cabin fight

To be super pedantic, these three are 2022 games…

Love it - going to have a little bit of a think for ranking then post my votes at the weekend.

Prodeus is earlier than that. Can only judge the games when I play them mate.

Hmmm. This isn’t exactly the spirit of the thread. Not like I’m going nominate Rumours for album of the year 2023, just cause I heard it this year.

:frowning:

You’re going to have pull @zeal as well then, he’s nominated chuffing Minecraft!

The numbering of 2, 3 and 4 was not intentional.

Any of these would have been my number one most years, all incredible and there are so many others I have loved or really liked (Octopath 2, Armored Core 6, Pikmin 4, Dave the Diver, Fire Emblem, Street Fighter 6, Pizza Tower and Starfield just off the top of my head).

Plenty of things I want to get to when they get a bit cheaper - especially some of the weirder indies which don’t make Game Pass. But not a bad first draft of the year.

Nothing was as good as Cocoon for me.
Hifi Rush was so good.
Venba made me cry, what the hell.
Starfield was the most amazing storyline I’ve played since Mass Effect 2.
TotK frustrated me a lot… But I enjoyed it more than other games I expected to this year.

Disappointed with Jusant. A lot.
