Don’t quite follow here… Do you not use iTunes currently to manage music on the iPod Classic?

Fuck iTunes.

I can only really assume/hope that things will largely carry on as they were before, just not everything is in 1 mega app. That’s probably being desperately naive, but there are still plenty of sources of legally downloadable music (Bandcamp, Bleep etc.) that would get seriously affected by this is, if indeed it is the end of Downloading As We Know It.

Yes, but if I have something on CD that is not on Apple Music I can rip it onto my home computer and then sync it onto my iPod Classic (iTunes Match will also, in theory, make it available on other devices as well, but this is a bit hit and miss). Not sure how I would do this post iTunes - will my available library on all devices not be restricted to things available on Apple Music (which is most stuff, but not everything)

I’m hoping this is not the case.

That is my only concern but I’m sure it will be fine.

I never really use itunes on my computer but thanks to downloading a million songs from rapidshare megaupload sendspace etc in those weird downloady times I’ve a big apple music library that spotify never gave me.

This time last year this would have been the end of my world but since I migrated to Spotify I really haven’t looked back. Used to live and die for those download cards that came in records and rip every CD but not any more. I don’t think I could ever give up a physical record collection but I have 0 concerns about abandoning my 50 gig music library even if it means I can’t listen to joanna newsome in the car any more.

No reason for it to do that - iTunes and Apple Music pretty much mirror each other already.

I dunno. I had a lot of friends tell me that when they signed up to Apple Music, the transition seriously buggered up their libraries. Think I’ll keep a backup copy just in case.

I worked out over a third of my music collection isn’t on Spotify et al. I’m guessing that will reduce in time but it’s a pretty big gap. I just listen to what is available on streaming though when out and about.

Google Play Music app will do this for you, although you have to sync via the cloud rather than direct from laptop to phone.

I took my old iPod Classic to a place that swapped out the old hard drive for a solid state 250gb job, and it’s been amazing. Sadly still doesn’t fit ALL my music, but a goodly amount. Main problem I have now, though, is I now have TWO pairs of headphones with me. A bluetooth pair for my phone, and a wired pair for my Classic. Buying the new Touch would sort that issue out, but £400 is a lot to spend on a bluetooth requirement!

Might just get a big usb drive and leave it plugged in all the time (which is all I do with my ipod at the moment). A 128GB stick is about £380 cheaper than getting a new ipod.

Yeah I did the apple music trial, I have iTunes match for all my downloads and it just mixes them all together, so if I searched for an album i’d get loads of duplicates with different punctuation and what not. seems a bit of an oversight because it basically means it is way more convenient for me to not use apple music

£400 for an MP3 player with 256GB storage is awful value if you ask me.

But if they close iTunes how will you update/sync the Classic?

With the new Music app they’re releasing

Is that definitely going to work with a Classic?

This is what i’m hoping. Different app, but hopefully still supporting older models. I’m not sure why they’d allow uploading to a new iPod Touch, but not an older Classic. But then Apple are Apple, soooooooooo…
