The Flaming Lips Thread (Rolling) - 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots' IRE/UK Tour 2025

Soft Bulletin was what put me off. I remember being very disappointed when I heard it. Indie points (not really, I just didn’t like it).

Still worth it then or does it detract quite a lot? These tickets aren’t gonna be cheap I feel …

Yeah, I feel a bit like this. I utterly love the music (along with Stephen and Michael) but some of Wayne’s behaviour doesn’t sit right with me. He’s mistreated Kliph, broken up with his partner of twenty odd years and has taken up with someone thirty years his junior. It feel a bit off to me.

Hmm. I think it all depends on how many times you’ve seen them before? It’s going to be the same massive show but at least you’ll be guaranteed a string of songs you know and love. If it was me I’d go.

Being a bit more transparent, I just really liked the guitars from Hit to Death through to Clouds Taste Metallic. I hadn’t realised (until now) that Ronald Jones (their guitarist) left after the latter and that Zaireeka was a transition into a less “traditionally rock” sound. In my view, they had that balance of experimentation and crunching guitars down so well it was a formula that didn’t need fiddling. That and tunes like Brainville, Turn It On, Plastic Jesus, Bad Days, Slow Nerve Action, The Sun, etc, were all so catchy and perfect I couldn’t see (at the time) how they weren’t the biggest band in the world.

Also, if I’m honest, it’s a bugbear of mine when bands make significant changes to a winning sound - I wouldn’t begrudge anyone’s enjoyment of any of their records though, they’re clearly a great band.

Never before! And I love Soft Bulletin so that’s me convinved ta

Can see why aspects of the show would be tired if you’ve seen them several times before.
But the one time I saw them (Porto Primavera 2012) it was absolutely amazing. Full pomp mode, streamers, Wayne in the hamster ball etc. The setlist was full of bangers and the band sounded great.
Would totally go again if they were playing anywhere near me.

I’m exactly the same - loved them up to and including Clouds Taste Metallic (subject to below) and never liked anything afterwards (well, anything I heard) due to increased whimsy/fewer guitars. Although going to the Beatbox Experiment gig - the absolute height of pointless pretension to my ears then and now - probably did for me too.

And to comment on something said WAY upthread I always loved Telepathic Surgery (listened to it today for the first time in ?15 years as a result of this thread and still happy with it). The dud in the early catalogue was obviously Oh My Gawd!!! which, from name and artwork down, was awful

Indeed :unamused:

Got two anyway…

£40 here. Still haven’t got used to normal gigs costing more than about £25 tbh

I am intrigued by this as quite a few of my mates are big fans and none of us share your view. I honestly think Brainville and Bad Days could fit on Soft Bulletin. I feel like it did creep poppier progressively upto Yoshimi, but for me it all just made sense. Yoshimi for me felt like a big coming out party.

Mercury Rev - Yerself is Steam to Deserters Songs, now that really is just a completely different band!

Got a couple of tics for Brixton. Can’t wait, one of my all time favourite albums.

Phew, almost forgot but got Usher Hall tickets

Also the Peace Sword mini LP which sounds like the natural successor songs to Embryonic that didn’t suit the style of The Terror.

Peace Sword is great, a wonderful piece of work. Amazed that it started as a movie spin-off as well.

I’d also note that Once Beyond Hopelessness, the ‘Christmas On Mars’ soundtrack is up there too. My favourite Winter I/II album.
