All the 30 years of hurt shit surely implies wanting to win the thing as well though? I remember pretty much everyone at the time expecting to win because it was on home turf and 30 years since they last won a tournament (and tbf I’m it was a decent England team still reeling from 1990 then being a bit shit since)

Yeah I know but no one’s picking that one over good vibrations

You’re right, I had assumed that I Get Around, Surfin USA, California Girls, Wouldn’t It Be Nice etc were all number 1s, why the hell weren’t they, going to go back to 60s UK and have a word

Amazing that Surfin USA only got to 34 and California Girls to 26. God Only Knows was number 2 behind the Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine double A Side so that’s a tough market.

They did have another number 1 with Do It Again but I’m struggling to recall ever hearing that.

There’s got to be a thread in this: ‘really well known singles that weren’t big hits’ or something. Go Your Own Way only got to 38 you know

Summer of 69 never broke the top 40…

There needs to be a Jim Steinman song in there somewhere - or is his OTT bombast not “cool” enough for the guardian?

Total Eclipse of the heart and I’d do anything for love where both number ones.

Nobody expected them to win it, that’s why it’s got all the clips of pundits slating the team at the start.

It’s about wanting to win it despite being a bit rubbish

Don’t think the UK were really aware of Beach Boys until Good Vibrations/Pet Sounds and even then it would have only been because The Beatles talked about how good they were. Beatlemania would have been in full swing along with the Kinks and the Stones by then, and let’s be honest the UK isn’t really gonna be that bothered by some surfing lads from California at the time that London was considered the coolest city in the world.

Fair enough, I guess it’s the relative success (both on the field and commercial) of Euro 96 that fed that attitude going forward

But we’re all agreed that Three Lions is definitely not in the top ten, right?

Yeah, the 98 version is definitely more what you described

It’d be a very transparent “let’s wind up BTL” move if it was in the top 10

Mad that Three Lions has been number one more times this century than Scotland have qualified for a major tournament.

Can see that being top 10 actually

Feel like Meatloaf just missed out on no.1 for most of his biggest hits but I’m too lazy to check.

This is what I get for questioning the motives of beloved England football song huh :joy:

Think West End Girls or It’s A Sin will make top ten.
Apologies if I’ve missed it, but not seen a shout out for Don’t You Want Me by Human League - got to be a contender?

I think I mentioned it earlier, it’s a dead cert top 10er I reckon

Fuck just remembered Black Parade was a no.1! Top of the list please
