This reads like every Guardian music list ever

Which is precisely why Ghost Town will be number one.

Nice one, I hadn’t realised that at all! Now to find it on 7"!

Luckily, you won’t need to save up for too long.

I think it must be Ghost Town but can see them being wry and having it at Number 2.

Contenders:
Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)
Specials - Ghost Town
Dexy’s Midnight Runners - Geno
Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger (not sure if this one’s already in there)
White Town - Your Woman
Cornershop - Brimful Of Asha

I can see them adding Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter for irony
Likewise I can see them having The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go, which shouldn’t be allowed as Levi’s got that to Number 1 more than anything.

Thinking…

Isn’t it one song per artist? Dexys have been in already (and annoyingly for Come on Eileen instead of the far superior Geno).

As a rule I don’t buy Prince records from Discogs, I like hunting them down in real life. Not doing too badly so far and that’s only part of it.

Ah, I didn’t know that. I can just about remember a Junior school mate bringing Geno over and playing it on my suitcase record player. Properly exciting song then and sounds just as good now.

In this case Cars (Gary Numan) can be in there as it’s not Tubeway Army?

do people actually like this song?

I’m lucky (and old) enough to have most of the albums from the time (got Sign O The Times on at the moment, in fact).

I know what you mean about the joy of finding something and how Discogs feels a bit like cheating, but I’m afraid I don’t have the patience for sorting through boxes of ill-sorted 7” singles (although the chance to do something like that at the moment would feel like a luxury).

Don’t know. It’s subjective isn’t it. I liked it at the time as it had cartoon parts in the video, I would have been 9.

I do like Pink Floyd and do like that it was the last Number 1 of the 70’s as it feels right to end the decade. It does have some of the mood of Punk in it despite it being Pink Floyd. It’s catchy and like FGTH the masses didn’t really click with its content initially, I just like that such a dark record was Christmas Number 1.

My comment probably came across as snarky but I didn’t mean it to.

I kind of think of it in the same vein as Bohemian Rhapsody - just sort of one of those songs that is almost impossible not to know, in the UK at least - but I’ve never really picked up on any genuine love or affection for it in the same way as Bohemian Rhapsody.

I started collecting them a few years ago, got a few reissues (Sign O’ The Times included) but I enjoy having the originals.

We’re lucky here in Cork to have a few great record shops that hold any Prince stuff for me. What I wouldn’t give for a root through a box of 7" singles now though, the absolute dream!

I hate both of them with an unbridled passion

Not at all, I didn’t take it that way.

It’s probably one other most punchy Pop tracks but does have a dark underbelly.

In italy 99% of all English language music you hear on the radio, in bars, playing in cars etc is either Queen or Pink Floyd. I’ve got to the point where it just amuses me.
