No accidental capitals there. Watching The Young Ones on Blu Ray which I purchased today from HMV, watched it when it aired in 1982 and that impact from a comedy show airing has never really been replicated for me. Not seen this for decades though, it is dated, but it is still both iconic, surreal and just pushes the buttons for me.
Having lived in Bristol for 6 years, and now being back in Brum from 2022, is The Kebab AND CALCULATOR near Westbury-On-Trym, by that Waitrose and cinema? It just feels that it is. Enjoying The Young Ones here, it’s giving me huge pangs of missing Bristol though.

Feared this wouldn’t hold up. Should never have had any doubt. “Bombs”.

I believe it is yes, it’s definitely Bristol anyway

Gowing up it felt like my entire sense of humour was derived from series 2 of The Young Ones. Still thoroughly love it.

That pub is near me, I would describe it as absolutely fine.
Edit: yep, it’s the one opposite the big Waitrose.

I ultimately think the first series of Bottom is the best manifestation of their whole thing but, yeah, The Young Ones still holds up incredibly well imo

Weirdly I’m pretty sure I saw just about everything those two did together, except for some inexplicable reason I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode of bottom. Absolutely no idea why
Always pleasently surprised how well Bottom has held up.

I feel like I was every member of the Young Ones, slowly (quickly) becoming both members of Bottom.

It used to be called The Cock of the North and yes it was in Westbury. I went there a few times when I was at Filton technical college in the 80s. I remember it was close to a cinema as I remember we all spent lunch time in the kebab and calc and then went and watched Basil the Great Mouse Detective at the cinema rather pissed!

Still blows my mind that I have watched every episode of the Young Ones countless times over the last 40 years and it was only a couple of years ago I learnt about the silent 5th housemate, I was so sceptical until I dug out the DVDs and lo and behold there he is sat in the corner in more than one epoisode. How the fuck did I never spot him over all those no doubt hundreds of viewings?!

This. Absolutely seminal and felt so strongly that it was made specifically for me and my mates! My older sister says that for her Monty Python’s Flying Circus did the same thing for her peer group. Your parents hated it, it was quite rude (for the time) and it was side spllittingly hilarious.

They had definitely run out of ideas by season 3, and whatever was left they chucked into the Ferris Wheel episode, but seasons 1 and 2 are chef’s kiss
Spotted this person last night when I watched the first 3 episodes on Blu ray, I’d never seen them before either.

Yes, the Monty Python’s Circus thing resonates. I’ve never really liked Monty Python (the series), feels like The Beatles, as in generationally too old for me. First episode of The Young Ones in 1982 and the next day at school literally everyone was going on about it. It just fitted the generation and it was a new school / cool / style of comedy - the like of which we’d been screaming out for but didn’t realise it until it hit us like a truck of hilarity.

Might still have my dad’s copy of the Young Ones tie in book somewhere. It was brilliant so I hope so
