Just started reading it.
Fontaines DC better than Thin Lizzys Live & Dangerous?
List is garbage.

it’s a mixture of good and shite. redeems itself with the top spot.

enjoying all the upset old men in the comments

Aye there’s lots of good stuff in the list.
Fontaines are just shite imo. And 2 from Divine Comedy? Bit weird. They’ve not even included Microdisney I don’t think. God Is An Astronaut and Jetplane Landing deserve spot’s too imo.
And Fionn Regan!

new album sounds a lot stronger than the debut based on the singles so far

Quite enjoy someone arguing for Snow Patrols inclusion but then fumbling the ball by saying that album should be ‘Eyes Open’ :flushed::joy:

Nah they’re just not for me.
Their hollow, vapid, posturing and fake nature coupled with a swell of lads lads lads in their fan base is the perfect ‘nope’ for me.

No SLF is a big omission too. Musically and politically highly important.

I can see that they were trying to move away slightly from the established Irish canon but it’s still a strange one for sure. But we’re all chatting about it so. I’d have an ASIWYFA record on the list at least

Not even the right David Holmes album and A house were always shite.

Yes!

Edit: nah not even.
Soak is like the musical equivalent of plain toast.
It’s totally boring but not bad as such. Would be really weird to have it amongst your faves tho.

never liked the debut at all but i haven’t tried the second album

Lol actually just edited my reply as I think I was overly harsh.
Lisa ONeill for example is a much better singer songwriter.

50% written by Ed Power. Surprised he didn’t include the same album twice.

all a bit meh, reminds me of when Q magazine did their top 100 greatest albums or whatever a few years apart and just switched the order around a bit. Don’t know why they made a point of ‘we’re going to send the sacred cows to the shed for a bit’ in the intro, because all the cows seem to be out there in the field.

Divine Comedy were religiously praised by Hot Press back in the day. I think I just started listening to them when the music got a bit poor, but might get around to checking out those early releases

good to see Cathy Davey in the top 10 but it should be her third album.

Yeah I thought that was an odd choice.

The albums Holmes released either side of ‘Bow Down…’ are miles better. I’d go for ‘Lets Get Killed’ myself but ’ The Holy Wonders’ is great too. Even ‘This Films Crap…’ is better in fact.

lmao that explains things

I’m a big fan of The Divine Comedy’s first five or so albums in the 90s. They were my first band I fell in love with and are easily still some of my favourite albums. Glad to see Casanova in the list (the first one I heard), and Promenade which is also pretty much perfect. His other albums are still good, sometimes a bit patchy, but often having at least a few great songs still. Definitely recommend having a listen to the earlier albums anyhow.

I like the Soak album, and Villagers, and nice to see Gemma Hayes and The Frank & Walters in there too (although I would have chosen either of the f&S’s two subsequent albums).

Was surprised/disappointed not to see David Kitt’s Big Romance in the list though.
