🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The Official Scottish Music Thread 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

been meaning to do this for years, think it’s a bit pathetic how good the Irish thread is yet we don’t have one north of the border

so get posting about local favs, older discoveries, go wild

inspired to make this finally after just booking in to see Edwyn Collins final tour in the autumn. Saw he added an Edinburgh date and thought I’d kick myself for not getting to see a legend up close (obviously missed the start of sales and ended up with so-so seats)

also think the new album was pretty grand, some lovely lush arrangements

That night loads of the social boarders spent hours just naming Scottish bands is still one of my favourite days on here.

As always, my answer will be Ballboy.

only discovered them a few years back with the reissue of Club Anthems - really hope I get a chance to see them, seems they get together to play a gig a year up here still

Very open to any suggestions of new (debut album ish) Scottish acts. It’s weirdly hard to keep up with who’s good

Might be the best Scottish album of all time

Recent releases (or pre-orders) that have sparked my interest:

The Mary Column – Very Sparrow

Very Sparrow shines in the same vein as Alex Chilton’s Big Star via Teenage Fanclub and The Pastels, with rich glints of Evan Dando’s Lemonheads and Jonathan Richman’s Modern Lovers.

Bikini Body – Weirder Party (remix EP of the also-excellent Weird Party EP)

Bikini Body say - It was really important to us with these remixes that we showcase the wide tastes and perspectives of the Scottish underground scene, showing there doesn’t have to be a divide between guitars and dance music.

Penelope Trappes – A Requiem

(Penelope Trappes isn’t Scottish but this album was recorded in Scotland so it basically counts according to the thread rules I have invented in my head).

Seeking solitude for what she knew would be an intense and cathartic writing experience, Trappes travelled to Scotland and isolated completely. Amidst meditative and psychedelic states, she channeled demons and accessed parts of herself she’d long desired to cleanse. ‘A Requiem’ is a musical service in honour of the dead, a sanctuary Trappes built for herself to explore familial chaos and history.

Saint Sappho – Fall Into the Lie

This one is from Optimo’s new “Rocks” offshoot label:

Alternative rock duo based in Glasgow, fuelled by multi-instrumentalist Zoe and drummer Tammy - the nexus between both members creates a unique sonic result. The pair collaborate to establish sounds of 90’s rock embedded through the use of distorted guitars alongside melancholic vocals.

Yeah I thought they were a bit dull initially but they really clicked for me recently. Guitar sounds are gorgeous

Never realized they were Scottish. Ladder is one of my favorite songs of the decade.

Let’s also not forget one of the best bands from Scotland all time and one of NY’s dad favorites.
