The Sandman (Netflix series based on classic Neil Gaiman graphic novel)

very odd in the end

Episodes 5 in the diner, 6 with Death, and 11 with the animated cats were pretty great. Funny, offbeat, added to the overall story without feeling bogged down by too much exposition or the weight of the main plot etc. Diner has been covered plenty but was very creepy and made me think of Tennant in Jessica Jones, Death was one of the best characters of the whole show and brought out a much more enjoyable side in Dream (or at least they were a fun double act and study in contrasts), and the Cats one felt like a nearly self-contained little thing that could have been one of the best episodes of Love Death and Robots

so much of the rest though … :man_shrugging: not at all worst thing i’ve seen, still fun in a Dr Who sci fi romp way (not said as a negative) but I really didn’t get much philosophical weight or importance from it, there wasn’t much of a sense of what was at stake, and Dream was just real bland most of the time (and Rose wasn’t much better, given all the trauma that was built into her story). Far too pretty and imperious and distant most of the time - I don’t want a God to be relatable but he just wasn’t that interesting either. And since we started off with him imprisoned for so long it felt hard to take him as all-powerful after that

decent enough overall but not sure they know where their own strengths lie tbh. S2 built around Death please! Also, another post to gripe about how an adaptation of an acclaimed COMIC BOOK didn’t even bother to have a fucking intro sequence or theme, which feels like a legit cultural crime to me. Of all the mediums which should do a good and creative intro sequence …

And it should have been made by Dave McKean. I mean, WFT?

McKean did animated title sequences for the end of each episode. There was a watch titles button.

I was wondering. Thanks, will watch them now.

FOR INFORMATION:

If you liked this then you should also like Dead Boy Detectives

Also based on a Neil Gaiman thing and set in the same universe.
It’s also really good.

Has series 2 just been quietly put out? I saw it all listed on a torrent site earlier, but I’ve seen nothing else about it launching anywhere

There was a Guardian review today (and not a very good one). I think everyone involved wants to pretend it’s not really a thing.

Out today. Can’t blame them for not promoting it really - if it hadn’t already been well under production and with plenty of jobs on the line I’d say they should probably have cancelled it.

reading this thread back, and remembered that after quite a positive start I didn’t even finish the first season. Even without the Gaiman horror which none of us knew about at the time (although I maintain that I reckoned he was a wanker even then) it ended up as a misfire. Not going to bother with this second series.

I’ve watched the first few episodes because I can’t help but want to see how Seasons of Mist and Brief Lives are brought to screen but am kinda despising myself for it.

I’m going to watch season 2 on the reasoning that Sandman was never just Gaiman, it was a collaborative work from the outset as a comic and even more so as a television series. But I’m glad that there won’t be any more, if I’m being honest. It’s too tainted to go on.

Yeah exactly this

Wouldn’t buy the books, but so many people who are not Neil Gaiman worked on this that I don’t feel so bad about it. Feels like punishing everybody else involved for his action to boycott it, if that makes sense?
