When you guys take another person’s post and put it in a simpsons picture, is it only funny if you know the scenario/episode the image is from or do you all like it just because there’s a picture of a simpson and you like the simpsons?
It’ll take a couple of minutes for you to get an answer because people are trying to find a picture and quote to respond with
Genuine Simpsons ambiguity
Probably 60% knowing the scenario/episode, 5% Simpsons appreciation, 25% that those episodes are ingrained in my subconscious and the subconscious of a lot of other folks here, 10% they take seconds to create on Frinkiac.
Just realized with a non-trivial degree of sadness that Simpsons memes are going to be a proper generation gap thing. No-one under 30 will get 80% of the cultural references and given that >3/4 of it is utter shite there isn’t much reason for younger generations to engage on any level.
Don’t worry someone will do a Frinkiac for MrBeast videos in 15 years’ time and that’ll be the thing instead.
It’s all about the context for me, but then also the meta humour from having about 40% of my brain taken up by Simpsons episodes. e.g. @drastic_measures post above is funny to the Simpsons brainworms because it’s supposed to say “YES”, or I know I can post pretty much any scene from Homer Goes To College and @profk will know that I’m really meaning Homer shouting “NEEERRRRD!” from the car.
Don’t think I’ve watched an episode of the Simpsons this century
My experience of Facebook groups and Reddit tells me plenty of new young people still get into the show, although they often have different views on when the show went bad.
Just want to say this is a perfectly cromulant opening response
What is their take?
I’ve seen people talk about the mid-high teen and early 20s seasons being the cutoff point. Which… ok.
Think generally it’s whatever was airing when you were a kid.
I’ve come to the conclusion that if you see a simpson you enjoy it regardless of context
Fugu is the only good episode
I get pretty much none of the Simpsons meme references, in spite of having watched a fair amount of Simpsons in my time. I just kinda tune out any image with too much yellow in now.
Tbh I wish people would stick to references that are universally known, like Alan Partridge and Chris Morris stuff.
Me too
The simpsons has never done much for me. I got disney plus with my bank as an add-on and watched some early stuff that people say is good but it’s still mid af
