that is objectively not true though:

reckon the first track that could legitimately be considered boring, though not by me, is track 9

don’t remember most of the second disc but all of the heavy ones are definitely boring

7 is arguably their best song

“I forget to forget nothing is important” I hate that lyric so much

how come, I think it is quite a nice lyric about forgetting a bad past, really like the “I sensed my loss before I even learned to talk” bit too

I just feel like “forget to forget” is kind of an empty lyric that is trying too hard to be clever and doesn’t mean anything. Who knows where these instinctual reactions to lyrics come from eh?

sometimes words just sound nice, having said that I always thought ‘forget to forget’ is a good way of someone expressing they are struggling with something they have tried to forget

Think the first 5 songs of disc 2 are very good, but it wobbles a bit after that.

I guess I just think unless someone’s playing a solo, guitars sound shit on smashing pumpkins tracks

There’s a neat lead guitar line that follows the vocal melody?

Is there a Pumpkins song you wouldn’t say this about?

Jellybelly is the first one you could call boring and Stumbleine is the last one you could call great.

Think the best thing about this album is the mix of heavy ones and dreamy ones and poppy ones and stupid ones means that there are some good heavy ones.

Everything before this apart from Today and Spaceboy is shit.

I don’t really understand they question, I have always rated ‘to forgive’ very highly, it is probably the most personal song on the album for Corgs. Jellybelly is objectively not a boring song, can understand someone not being into it, but it is not boring

by starlight is great, so is farewell and goodnight “the sun shines but I don’t.”

This thread is going to be the death of me. If we’re really going to be raising critical standards to the point where Mellon Collie is considered boring and in need of trimming, then there isn’t one album from the past 20 years that gets to have more than two songs.

And this discussion is a prime example of how Corgan’s work is held to a certain standard that other artists don’t have to meet.

Ha ha! Genuinely can’t think of a single album since The Freewheelin’ that couldn’t be trimmed.

Melon Collie is up there with Daydream Nation and 69 Love Songs in that the overall quality and undoubted highs justify the extended running time. Doesn’t mean there’s no shit in there!
