I’d accept, but disagree, that it is better crafted, but more varied? Objectively not

we all know from your earlier comparisons, that you’ve barely even listened to Soundgarden, so your loss.

Just checked and Mellon Collie sold over 10,000,000 copies in the US. Wow. Didn’t realise they were that big.

:joy: oooh salty, salty post bro

this is a bit like comparing an all you can eat buffet to a Michelin stared restaurant. sure the buffet might offer more obvious variety and be really enjoyable in a glutinous way, but the crafting is much more rewarding in the long term.

I toss pinches of the stuff over everything i post, you might want to try adding a potato or something to get a bit of osmosis on the go.

Yeah but it would be correct to say the buffet is more varied which is how this subthread started, the pumpkins are the most varied of their peers. Whether they are buffet quality or not is a different debate, personally think they are gourmet

NO, MY FAVOURITE IS THE BEST BAND

Really loving how this thread has developed. I think I’m on severed’s and ttf’s side here despite the Pumpkins only being my 153rd most played on last.fm (between Miles Davis and Madness)

In defence of blank page I think it is musically pretty interesting, there is a weird chord change towards the end (harmonic major scale move maybe) and then when those mangled guitars come in it is perfect, graham coxon has certainly never crafted something as elegant

That’s 10 million units shipped to retailers. Each CD or each single vinyl or a single cassette counts as a unit. This how the industry bigs itself up to get platinum records from the RIAA.

The chances are that it sold at most 3.5 to 4 million copies to customers. Still massive for an Indie rock band.

my point was more that the crafting required greater variety, but anyway.

But in the context of the original ‘indie rock’ dis the type of variety bring discussed is stylistic rather than chord progressions, voicing intervals etc
