Not being rude, just simple advise

Don’t really see how Coxon is worth comparing… unless it is also trolling

Coxon guitars on blank page apparently

it was for two reasons, firstly the guitars in Blank Page reminded me of him and then the gubbins about him not being able to craft elegant chords.

Yes. Joanne Newsom’s triple album would have to ship 333,000 CDs to retailers to get a platinum record for ‘One Million albums sold!’. Any returns are not retroactively removed.

I meant the bit where the mangled guitars really start to come in rather than the chord progression, more the arrangement of sounds rather than the chords

Ohhh…kaaaay

Just making sure I understand this correctly: if Mellon Collie sold 3.5 million copies being a double album this is 7 million units and over 1.5 million copies (3 million units) that were shipped to retailers remian unsold?

Hey guys I’m new to this thread. Was a consensus ever reached?

Yes. Smashing Pumpkins are not quite as good as Miles Davis but slightly better than Madness.

Thanks JohnM!

good idea, let’s check in with what has been decided in this thread:

  • Grunge: not a thing

  • Alice in Chains were a sub-par Creed

  • Smashing Pumpkins were, briefly, the biggest band in America after Kurt Cobain died

  • Although comparing them is a bit silly due to the timelines, they’re both definitely better than Soundgarden

  • Pixies are the only adult response out of everyone mentioned in this thread

did I miss anything?

TBF I’ve not actually listened to Mellon Collie. I got bored trying to make it through Siamese Dream after the 103rd endless wibbling guitar solo. And this was after seeing them live at Glastonbury 1998 and thinking they were OUTSTANDING. Very odd.

Not sure range matters much to be honest. To me every SP song sounds very similar because Corgan’s style is very similar, whether it’s going for an electronicy thing or just your normal guitar thing, and because his vocals are so specific too. Radiohead have huge range too but at the same time they always sound exactly like Radiohead.

Nirvana are obviously a much much much better band than any other discussed here, barring the Pixies maybe. And even then while I admire the artistry and craft of the Pixies, they haven’t ever managed to write songs to the same immediate level that Nirvana have. And I am a man who loves a good song. Nirvana wrote some of the very best.

err…

Yeah two songs mate.

You should listen to Mellon Collie, it’s an incredible record at it’s best and always at least impressive at it’s worst

(or my abridged version)
