The State of Football

A little thread to discuss the money, the laundering, the sportswashing, the absolute shite like the Club World Cup, and the continued dismantling of our institutions.

Would be nice if the big 4, Newcastle, Man Utd and Spurs fucked off to a super league and left the rest of us to it

Find it very hard to care about anything not involving my team, apart from half-watching premier league matches most Sundays whilst i cook dinner

Have watched maybe 45 minutes of champions league football this season, don’t like it
Don’t care about international football, will watch finals, but wouldn’t care if they didn’t exist
Can’t get in to women’s football at all, no interest
Haven’t been to a match in person for a few years
Never really played football, was far too shit as a kid and never got picked

Online football culture in general is largely horrible and off-putting, with very, very few exceptions

great sport!

Still love playing football and watching live shit football, then have the big leagues as fairly detached entertainment but have never been a season ticket holder or supported a team who win anything so it’s pretty much fine for me. Go to a handful of Us and Fulham games per season, mostly away which is much more fun.

Do wish there was still room for unathletic talents at the top level, and they need something to sort out the gap between the prem and championship, but mostly still like the sport yeah, don’t even get as worked up over Var as most people

the sportswashing side of things ā€˜annoys’ me, but I’m too lazy to get actively involved in doing anything about it, except i don’t pay for sky or bt any more. Not directly anyway.

Remember before the Qatar World Cup, all the Guardian writers were doing some journalism about the country and situation and relationship with fifa. Then continued to keep saying ā€˜the important thing is we don’t just speak up now, we can’t forget this as soon as the football starts!!!’…Then they all forgot it when the football started and haven’t followed up on anything at all since. :+1:

Been getting increasingly disillusioned over the years but had largely been in the ā€˜thats ok, ill keep watching that garbage’ camp, however I think my interest has waned massively over the last year or so.

Wolves jacking the prices up by nearly 20% for the season just gone after a lacklustre 23/24 (so it’s now nearly Ā£50 even for the shit fixtures) and the owner’s response pretty much being ā€˜fuck off and support the Villa if you don’t like it’ and almost complaining about the fact they can’t fill the ground with tourists was a fairly hefty nail in the coffin.

Only went to 3 or 4 games last season, after doing at least a dozen the season before. Can’t be fucked paying Ā£50 and not getting home until 11.30 because it’s been moved to 8pm on a Saturday night for TV. Certainly not coughing up Ā£60 for the ā€˜big games’ just to see them get turned over by City or whoever.

Would love it to all go bang spectacularly.

Keep intending to get down to Alvechurch a bit more often but I work 2/3 Saturdays and I’m not wasting my Saturday off going to watch that dross, when I can watch something of similar quality like Bournemouth v Leeds on TV without leaving the house.

Generally very happy with football. Am not going to wring my hands about sportswashing or certain clubs having more money than others.

I just regard it as entertainment with no more cultural worth than anything else on the TV.

It was much the same when I had a season ticket - the football was really the pretext to meet up with mates. More fun if you won, but not worth losing sleep if you lost.

Leveraged buy outs has ruined football for me but the rest of you scumbags fucking love it

Think this might be the first season in my lifetime where I haven’t seen a single second of Premier League football and I haven’t missed it in the slightest. The coagulation of money at the very top of the game is just gross and while it’s clearly still finding its audience I’m happy not to be part of it.

Have become one of those tedious people who goes to non-league football and won’t bore everyone by droning on about how much fun it is but yeah, it’s loads of fun.

Oh, and by and large online football discourse is fucking awful and that’s probably played a significant part in my loss of interest.

Not saying you’re ā€œwrongā€, you know how you feel better than me obvs. But it’s interesting you see it this way, these two points seem at total odds with each other to me.

I enjoyed football and had a season ticket for forty years. But I stopped going once matches were increasingly played at inconvenient times and as my friends became too old or ill to come too. I did one season going on my own and jacked it in.

While at matches, you’d see people making themselves sick with fury if the result didn’t go their way and I decided early on that it wasn’t worth doing the same.

Now I enjoy my team on the telly and appreciate the mindlessness of football generally. It’s the most important non-important thing in my life.

Your regular football intake (take regular to mean whatever you want idc)

  • TV (live)
  • TV (highlights)
  • Watching in person (elite level)
  • Watching in person (efl or equivalent)
  • Watching in person (non league)
  • Playing (small sided games)
  • Playing (11-a-side)
  • fantasy football
  • podcasts
  • gambling
  • video games
  • something else I’ve forgotten

Mostly follow football via the football threads on here, BBC/Guardian coverage and sometimes watching goals on r/soccer. Oh and 5Live too (probably my favourite way to enjoy it).

Oh yeah I like footy on the radio while doing some cooking or driving

Awful as relegation is for the wider community I’m genuinely looking forward to a year of us absolutely shithousing the most dire pits of England.

Still really enjoy going to a game even though the experience is significantly shitter than it used to be and the football is as bad as it’s ever been. Pour that garbage down my throat.

Pretty much only watch my own team bar the odd champions league game, so have little idea what’s going on elsewhere.

I still play all the time

following started to lose its joy for me some time in the late 00s. lots of reasons, but mostly it’s just exhausting to have that deep a tie to the fortunes of something you have no control over

I enjoyed the 2018 World Cup, but after that, I’ve found it very hard to want England to win because of all the shitbag football fans we have

yup. DiS included.
