The Super Mario Bros movie - Spoilers

It’s quite odd seeing this new and unusually emotive face for Mario, but I do quite like it. Nothing like the shock and horror when I first saw Sonic in the trailer.

Any chance Nintendo might be hiding a new mario game to go along with the movie? It could explain the delay at least.

Way too much discourse going on over the voice of a video game character in a kid’s film

I’m sure Illumination executives will be crying into their $700 million box office or whatever

Can’t wait for Pratt to voice Link in a 2026 Legend of Zelda film and we can do this all over again!

The amount of discussion is a little weird but it’s also the nadir of celebrity voice acting, a particularly bad and distracting choice. There’s something… painfully conservative about going for someone like Pratt, at the expense of people who could do a much better job. At the same time, although I like the Mario games, this is a film for children and it’s silly to see adults getting worked up about it.

I think what bothers me more is the animation itself. Very weightless. Like watching The Minions but reskinned with Nintendo characters. And the script didn’t do anything for me either.

The reaction seems incredibly strong for a couple of lines of dialogue.

… and they’ve also got Charles Martinet anyway.

The fact you’re comparing Pratt to Miller and Depp is telling in itself and just shows how silly the discourse has got. Kind of wish now they’d got Brie Larson to voice Princess Peach, we could have got both political halves of Twitter foaming at the mouth about the film

it feels very mid.

  • it looks like an illumination movie which… isn’t a bad thing but also isn’t a great thing
  • jack black sounds amazing
  • chris pratt sounds incredibly “i’m trying but it sounds absolutely not like i’m trying”

it balances out. i’m worried they have mario twerk or something, mario isn’t naturally a “funny” character; the charm comes from the pure joy the games have. it’s going to be a very fine line to tread.

it is interesting that we’ve reached the “video games as movies” moment i’ve been waiting for for ages.

halo - kidna okay, but playing fast and loose with the game canon
last of us - never played it but looks like it could be a good show
sonic - shambolic debut that turned into incredibly fun movies
det. pikachu - pretty good but a strange back-door way of getting a live action pokemon movie

also man they made a need for speed movie lol

Will probably be alright if only because Miyamoto has been watching the production like a hawk

Thought it was fine by videogame adaptation standards. It was no Assassins Creed or Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

I’ll take your word for it because I have no desire to watch either of those films, and only saw NFS cos my friend had a spare to a press screening with the cast (I have a video on my phone of Aaron Paul saying “bitch” to rapturous applause)
