Excellent, underrated, if a tad pompous album.
Listening to it now for first time since I was about 15, cheers
Used to love this band back in the day, not sure I’d still get on with em now but will revisit somewhen for sure. Dusk was my fave iirc.
Heard a track from the upcoming album yesterday - sounded alright in an Alabama 3 kind of way…
Can’t agree with pompous, just sometimes overwrought, lyrically and musically, but that’s part of Johnson’s charm for me. Maybe a product of its times too (Red Wedge etc.)… Infected is way more obviously political than Soul Mining.
Love the imagery in Sweet Bird of Truth, love the duet with Neneh Cherry on Slow Train to Dawn and adore the guitars and outro on The Mercy Beat. Definitely underrated and excellent
Really like Infected and Dusk but nothing comes close to Soul Mining, a perfect album
Weird one - not into but the last 90 seconds of Out of the Blue is some of the best music ever
Pretty much The The to a T, isn’t it? Big fan of Mind Bomb. Not afraid to be ridiculous in their absolute sincerity which I think is a good thing on balance.
I’ve had the Beaten Generation stuck in my head because of this thread and I really don’t like that song.
so
to the lot of you.
Absolutely loved it at the time, but I think it has aged less well than Soul Mining or even Dusk.
I liked those albums and loved dogs of lust as a kid , but isn’t he a bit of a covid loon now? Also, I know Luke Haines isn’t exactly a reliable source but his book makes him sound like a right knob
The The have fantastic songs but dated production values. I still love them
Really? Fuck sake.
All scrubbed now but yeah:
his new stuff has the same relationship to his old stuff as Van Morrison’s - pale facsimile musically with deeply cantankerous online bullshit in place of lyrics
revised my opinion on this, absolutely amazing song
Wow
