The Trip Hop Appreciation Thread

Tricky continues to produce masterfully, and one proof of that is Marta’s album from last year.

The new Puma Blue album is pretty good.

Not sure if there is a Massive Attack thread, but they appear to be teasing something.

Any links? All I can find is that 3D got arrested for saying genocide is bad in public this week.

They already confirmed a few months back that they had new music on the way in 2026, but didn’t say if it was singles, an EP or an album

I’d forgotten Massive Attack even ever release new music

Every couple of years they put out a new EP which is discordant and hard to listen to, so you only hear it once or twice, then never again. And then over the next couple of years you listen to Protection and Blue Lines and Mezzanine, and you yearn for some more Massive Attack, and the circle starts again

Wow - new Massive Attack and new BoC together. The sleeping giants awake. Maybe Portishead need to get their groove on too

Fingers crossed!

OK, I didn’t realise they’d released any EPs since 2016. I guess they might be putting them out on platforms I don’t usually use?

Feels like a Massive Attack sort of world at the moment.

I don’t think I even listened to this (was it just a physical release), but this is from 2024

(oh, so bandcamp doesn’t embed on the new upgrade)

Weirdly I’ve spent the last week or so rinsing those recent EPs, really love the moods.

New Massive Attack song on Thursday is a collab with Tom Waits

What do people make of Tricky? Aside from Maxinquaye and maybe Nearly God his stuff seems pretty patchy to me. I like tracks on the next three albums but none as a whole. The one with DJ Muggs is probably the most consistent of those but it’s still a step down from the first two. I gave up on him after that and everything I’ve heard or read since hasn’t inspired me to look further.

This thread has inspired me to revisit Massive Attack, a band I hadn’t engaged with much before recently. It was a bit of a shock listening to Eurochild from Protection, Tricky is using the same bars he did on Hell is Round the Corner… which also uses the same sample Portishead did on Glorybox. It’s my favourite track by him but the repetition and recycling is vexing.

Tricky’s tour began last night and sounds like the usual car crash. Glad I didn’t bother buying a ticket

Caught these as a support to Jasper Tygner. It might be a bit more post dubstep but the dnb breaks remind me of Lamb. It’s a lush track. (But not in an Orbital way)
