Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was always going to win her primary.
More important is what happened in the Bronx’s 15th Congressional District, a safe seat for the Democrats. The most likely candidate initially to win the primary was Rubén Díaz Sr., a fixture of Bronx politics who has been a long-standing critic of gay rights. That risked a disaster not just for the left in general but the gay community in particular: a conservative Democrat winning one of the country’s most liberal districts.
To counter this, progressive Democratic strategists pounded voters with information about Díaz’s pro-Trump and anti-gay record. As a result, unless absentee ballots dramatically alter the count, Ritchie Torres - Afro-Latino and gay - has won the primary and is on course becoming one of the first two black, gay member of Congress, together with Mondaire Jones who has won the Democratic primary in New York’s 17th Congressional District (another safe seat).
