Warren probably performed the best out of all them, and it is indeed a serious worry she’s going to siphon off Bernie’s support now.

Bernie has a slight advantage now, since he has a chance to respond… but he’s clearly in the tougher side of the draw.

So only 2 nominees last night support universal health care. These are meant to be the “left” party.

Good work America

Tbh there are loads of very impressive candidates.

Warren
Harris
Booker
Klobucher
Castro

Serious, articulate and with impressive track records.

That they have no chance of matching up to a fascist clown, even according to the so-called liberal portion of the media, is just part of the insanity.

I don’t think that Bernie is electable as president - he’s far too far left for a lot of Americans. My chief worry with Elizabeth Warren is whether America is ready to elect a woman yet. The Dems need to be really smart about who they choose - I reckon almost anyone but Hilary would have beaten Trump last time out.

Yearly reminder that Hilary won nearly a million(?) more votes than Trump. It’s not that the American people aren’t ready for a female president. It’s that their voting system is incredibly unfit for purpose

Serious about going to Itchy & Scratchy Land! Plus lame centrist posturing!

Yep - but I’m willing to bet that had Hilary been a man she’d have won by a mile (or if Joe Biden had been the nominee he would have) even allowing for the inherent problems with the Electoral College. She was just about the worst possible candidate to put against Trump.

i’ve been reading about the electoral college for years and i still can’t quite believe it’s actually a thing

I’m coming round to the belief that most, if not all political institutions worldwide aren’t really fit for purpose anymore - the last couple of years of UK politics have conclusively proved that. The changes we’ve seen in the last 30-40 years globally have rendered most of what came before irrelevant.

Worst election systems

  1. Electoral college
  2. First past the post

Did you guys know Democrats have got the most votes (won) 6 of the last 7 Presidential elections?

Probably.

Not sure either of them are great, but I think there’s some benefits to having to win some level of support on a geographic basis. Parts of the UK are ignored now, but it’d be so much worse if we had a system where you could win power by heavily targeting a small number of densely populated areas.

just catching up on how last night went. I’m not a kamala fan by any stretch, I’m aware of her record as a prosecutor, but goddamn she reduced biden to a quivering little manlet with that story about her experiences of bussing. the only people defending him at this point are the real scumbags.

kamala killed it by all accounts, people unimpressed with bernie. could it be that bernard is a spent force politically? time will tell (yes he is).

Has Trump rolled out the ‘Nasty Woman’ bit for Kamala yet?

Yeah as I’ve mentioned before there definitely seems a lot less ‘energy’ around Sanders’ campaign this time (including from the man himself). Not sure whether that’s the case given how distant I am from the whole thing, but there doesn’t seem to be any sense of momentum behind him this time and it seems like a non-performance last night won’t build any either.

yep. warren seems like she’s being boosted as a unifying candidate. she can function as a kind of diluting agent for both the neoliberal tendencies of the democratic establishment and the redistributive agenda of the DSA style leftists. only she won’t dilute the neoliberal tendencies all that much and i’m 90% sure none of the DSA lot really agree on wtf they mean when they talk about socialism anyway. so we’re probably going to end up with warren functioning as a kind of centre-left obama (if she wins the primary and the election, neither of which i think will happen), or if kamala’s surge is real maybe she could step up and be a much easier to understand obama 2.0, which i can see energising the dem base but leaving undecideds a bit cold. what worries me is…well, whatever her law and order credentials, the right wing breakdown over obama will look mild compared to what they’ll get up to under a kamala admin.

so…trump 2020 :slightly_frowning_face:

with the caveat that everyone sucks at predicting anything these days

Yeah, I take some solace in the fact that both Warren and Harris will at least be better than Biden.
