The Waterboys

What an exhilarating band. Impossible not to grin your face off when you listen to This Is The Sea all the way through

That whole album is great. Who’d have thought it was possible to do a version of Sweet Thing that’s as good as the original??

Great fucking band

The boxset is very good particularly the proper trad arr stuff and the full version of This Land Is Your Land

About once a year I get obsessed with this and it’s all I’ll listen to for a few days. It’s really beautiful sounding but chaotic, full of technical mistakes and I’m guessing a fair bit of improv from some of the players on it but it’s magic.

Love everything up to Fisherman’s Blues (inc the amazing boxset) and nothing after - is that the general consensus

Fucking incredible band.

Only seen them live once, but it was a perfect mid sunny Sunday afternoon at a festival slot which seemed like the perfect setting for them :+1:

No! Room To Roam, the album after FB is a bit too twee and patchy, but the next one, Dream Harder, was a good un. No ten out of ten classic albums after that, but good stuff scattered around the more recent records. I saw them at Beautiful Days last year, and this was a standout

Also, imagine having a song as good as this and not bothering to put it on your album

Saw then twice on the Fisherman’s Blues tour circa 1989 - 1990. When they played Edinburgh Playhouse they had a huge band of local trad musos join them for a big session on stage. A friend of mine who used to work with Mike Scott was asked to play bagpipes s part of it, but crashed on his bike and broke his fingers on the way to the gig!

They inspired me to play trad music and by 1991 I was in a touring band playing around Europe. Still listen to Fisherman’s Blues and Room to Roam now and again. Happy times.
