I remember visiting a webite called The Homepage of God.

It just had a cartoon picture of God running across a cloud on it, with a speech bubble saying “I’m God - GET OUT OF MY WAY!!”

Used to visit that every week or so. Great content.

Mxtabs for me, before ultimate-guitar became the one stop shop

i remember when i first discovered webcomics like achewood and such, felt like this novel new artform instead of just, you know, comics on the internet

Interesting to see what he was up to before he founded DiS

If you fancy kicking around what DiS looked like in April 2001, here’s the link: https://web.archive.org/web/20010401131111/http://www.drownedinsound.com:80/

There was the second review, which took a slightly different view, and hinted at what My Vitriol would become known for…

Five…lemons?

Going on to supercars.net and downloading huge photos of all the latest supercars from various motor shows to print off at great expense based on how much colour ink cost back in the day.

My friend and I downloading images of wrestlers in the style of South Park.

So much Napster. I remember keeping a pen and paper on me at all times so whenever I heard or remembered a song I liked I’d write it down to download later. Remember abbreviating everything in a code so only I would understand it, then my bastard brother found it when we were on holiday in Greece and demanded I tell him what it meant.

A low point was ringing a friend (landline, obvs) to tell him I’d discovered skins for Netscape Navigator and how cool (and dysfunctional) you could make your browsing experience look. He wasn’t that impressed.

I was weirdly into icon design and customising any user interface in any way. Used to spend hours just playing with the settings on literally everything just to see what it could do. There was a website called foood.net which had some nice icons. Had completely forgotten about this until now.

What was that snowboarding game with the infinite randomly-generated landscape? That was cool.

Downloading custom rollercoasters from the RCT forums was good too.

Everything was graded in lemons back then. The Lord of the Rings was a 5 lemon film in those days.

Now, where was I? Oh yeah: the important thing was I was enjoying My Vitriol’s album Finelines, which was the style at the time…

Just found I am still credited for an FAQ I compiled for an anime series in like 1999 or 2000.

Great stuff.

I use this site a lot, because it switches seamlessly from street maps to OS 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps and beyond. Most useful.

Using my school library’s computer (the only one we had connected to the internet) to print out the tab for “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”.

Using Lycos then Dogpile for searching before Google came along.

Spending many hours gazing in wonderment at the Spiritualized, Spacemen 3 and Spectrum discographies hosted on no-fi.com

Getting kicked off Napster for trying to download MSP’s “Know Your Enemy” before it came out, then realising how much better Audiogalaxy was anyway.

Playing Catbat, Catapult and Monkey Curling whilst waiting for my MSci project code to run.

Going home during uni holidays and being stuck with a 22k modem for months on end.

Using iTunes free song of the week to build my music taste around.

Actually buying individual songs lol (did find Pavement, Electrelane and DCFC through iTunes suggestions though can’t laugh too much).

Oh Jesus, being SUPER into the Ultimate Guitar forum. I had a Laney amp and that was easily one of the top 3-5 most active threads on the site - used to chat shit on there for hours with a load of randoms (usually metalheads due to Laney being gain-ier amps). But did chat about Sonic Youth loads with a Becky from Wales - she had a killer red Fender Jag. Hope that whole crew are well)

Being far too into Fanfics, and in an emotionally invested way, not even for porn. Don’t talk to me about it.

Meeting a random girl off of a LiveJOURNAL post about a Sugar Rush fanfic to go and see Hot Club de Paris. Could I write a more mid-2000s sentence? I think not.
