That does happen, but it doesn’t account for the general phenomenon.

There are a surprisingly low number of people who stay together having met at university - a more important factor is that the people you meet at university tend to shape your social groups for the ten years after it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers for Oxbridge couples was a bit higher due to how hard it is to find someone who can tolerate all the chat about college life and rowing for the rest of their lives.

It’s certainly a weird place - it does very strange things to the minds of people who went there.

(I also think that it’s a lot harder to get a job in Cambridge or Oxford as a graduate from a non-Oxbridge place, because you’re competing against people who went to the local universities. A combination of competition and networking makes the professional class in those cities a bit of a closed shop)
