this has (not entirely relevantly) reminded me that when i was in Luxembourg i had a Portuguese roommate who didn’t speak English and we had to try and communicate in French… she asked me if I was a student, so I said I was a student but worked as well, and she asked me where I worked and I said “un magasin” and - totally reasonably - she thought I meant that I worked for a magazine :grinning:

Is that one true? If so that’s pretty mind blowing

This reminds me of when I was on a childhood holiday in France and my dad ordered “Quatre poissons et frites”, and we were bought four plates of (excellent) chips. When after 30 minutes we asked about the fish, we managed to establish the waitress assumed we wanted “portions” of chips, probably because my dad mangled poisson so badly.

This seems quite dangerous. What if they imprint Prometheus into some bacteria dNa and I becomes sentient?

My favourite German colloquial phrase is ‘Katzensprung’ meaning ‘a stones throw’ or literally ‘A Cat’s Leap’. Which I thought you would like.

I posted a set of pictures of my cats I took in spring with ‘Cats In Spring - Katzensprung’ as the title. Punning gold for my one German friend.

Well I am an immigrant, so yeah. Duh.

My favourite of those is Fingerspitzengefühl- to do some with the feeling of your fingertips (to do something with a lot of care and attention)

For the sake of clarity, the last sentence doesn’t mean ‘I have one friend who happens to be German’.

I attended a seminar yesterday on IT security and the girl that took it was born in the NINETEEN NINETIES

That’s not a very good one zxcvbnm.

A better one: In two years freshers at uni will mostly have been born after 9/11. Weren’t even born when an event that shapes the whole world today took place.

I was talking to someone about sixties music at the pub last night and it occurred to us that we’re much closer to the 2060s than the 1960s

that’s pretty amazing

It’s old but I still can’t get over Bryan and Ryan Adams sharing the same birthday, I think it pretty much proves the simulation theory.
