My wife does the social media for bowel cancer UK and you’d be amazed at how often people send her photos of their shit

Could be worse, oncologists end up hearing all about the friends and relatives who died of cancer.

I think this is a large part of why people follow sports generally, to make small talk slightly easier

I mean there is no other reasonable explanation for why people like sports, it’s all terrible

It’s actually the best thing. But, it’s like I always say “different things for different people”

Very wise, I will add that to my lexicon of pithy phrases

I maintain a low level interest a few different teams (Swansea, Villa, Newcastle and Bristol Rovers) because it makes for really easy small talk with people I have to talk to here. Football’s where I draw the line though, would sooner pretend I’m deaf than try to have a conversation about cricket.

(You’re welcome to do so but please remember to credit me)

Sometimes it’s because they’ve been tricked into thinking it’s good by “society”

  • I would rather someone made small talk to me about my job
  • I would rather someone made small talk with me about some really specific thing that I have no interest in (eg Pecan Farming)

Oh I wouldn’t dream of doing it any other way

‘as ant always says, “different things for different people”’

(just practicing)

That ridiculous display last night: fuck off, nerd

“society”, at it again

In my opinion it is nice that you started this with “also” when the thing that it was also to was a vote not a post. I liked this.

How do you get into pecan farming? How long will it take a pecan tree to be ready to nut? I mean if I plant thins afternoon when is my first harvest? How will I survive up until that point? Maybe just carry on my job as usual as is there a lot to do other than harvesting? I would need capital and land.

Would this conversation be about people farming pecans or pecans doing the farming?

The latter, of course.

Thank you, I have now voted with this is mind

Personally I find following my football team to offer me an almost entirely inconsequential form of escapism, which makes me feel warm inside even when we aren’t winning from a shared sense of solidarity among fans (all sorts of people thrown together by their irrational love of a small football club) when we are done over or even when we play comedically badly, and enjoy feeling a devotion to something that is its own little microcosm, shielded against whatever else is going on in my life, an unyielding constant.

Either that or I fork out a few hunners a year and give up an inordinate amount of my free time to make small talk x

Love it when people get offended by being stereotyped when they actually live up to the stereotype.

Love it.
