Regarding people hating Secret Santa: we do a variant on this in my department that is SO MUCH BETTER I am going to evangelise.

Basically we’re all English teachers so we are all (theoretically) readers. In December we each buy a book that we love but which isn’t too well known or universally loved and we wrap it anonymously. In our social we each pick out a book at random and POW new book to read over the Christmas holidays. So much better than some smelly candles or whatever.
