I don’t think this is right. Lidl was always a separate company. There are two different Aldi companies though, at least in Germany. One for the North and one for the South. I’d been told that this happened when the brothers who founded Aldi fell out but I’m not 100% sure whether this is true.

Yup, that is true - they fell out over selling cigarettes in-store.

To add to the confusion, Aldi is called Hofer in Austria…
