This is shocking: Fake plays on Spotify

Had never seen this laid out so black and white like this

Like, I had heard it was happening but had no idea it was like this. Have you seen anything else like this?

Sorry! Was too incandescent to give it more context

I mean, given how much grifters, fakes and manipulators are running roughshod over most of the internet it’s not a surprise, but it’s depressing eh.

I think it’s more prevalent than most people realise.

I’m always suspicious when a band has millions of plays on multiple songs or a huge amount of monthly listeners but aren’t on any Spotify editorial playlists or have a correspondingly large following on social media to back up those numbers.

If it’s just one song you can put it down to a sync or it having gone viral on something like Tiktok, but when there’s multiple songs there’s normally something underhand going on.

Only one track on Spotify these days :disappointed:

If someone’s ripping off spotify i’m absolutely fine with it tbh

They’re not. They’re diluting the bucket for all artists.

The bucket is the square root of fuck all for near everybody to start with so i don’t see as it makes much difference.

Depends what scale it’s happening at doesn’t it? Lots of AI manipulation going on too apparently.

I’ve been aware of fake artists on Spotify, usually with just one song available with an impressive number of streams. I think that’s long been documented.

This comment sort of summed it up for me
