This sounds like a great way to leverage the blockchain revolution through synergy with a holistic solution.

I’d definitely be interested in running this up the flagpoll and seeing if who salutes, we should touch base.

Note that I hate using the word Bitcoin, but it’s a handy umbrella term for now from what I’m trying to get across… but yeah

Sean, as someone who has posted on here for a decade, I hate to think of the toll that this place places on you.

Don’t think too much about the community - it’ll figure something else out. If you’re struggling personally with this, and this situation is a perfect example of shit you don’t need in your life, then bin it.

The community is a great on, and is only better for the new site. But bin off the reviews and stuff, and let us take over this, maybe that’ll work.

Also, it needs to be said that you handled this incredibly well, a true credit to DiS as a whole.

It would be a great shame if DiS did close, but its perfectly understandable.

About 10 years ago, both @anon5266188 and I, both posted on a breakaway Football Manager forum, which focused on music and film. Someone else ran it and some of us donated towards the upkeep. To be fair there were only around 20 of us and it died after a few years, but DiS is far better.

Perhaps if sean really wanted to give it up, we could temporarily keep the DiS forums, before migrating over to a new forum with a new domain after a few months.

I should also get around to paying some money to sean for the forums, as I post a lot more regularly than I have ever done before.

Exactly this. Regardless of the validity of the accusations, this piece of writing is a disgrace.

As far as I can tell, the accusations were dropped after the band, accuser, and father of the victim met with Safe Gigs For Women and it was concluded that what happened as reported in the Louder Than War interview was accurate.

Regardless, the write up of this album review is entirely inappropriate. Yes, write about the accusations if you want but keep it out of the album review and used facts based, responsible language. The whole article reads like “ha, ha, told you so” and is very damaging for actual victims of assault considering coming forwards.

Yes, 10 contributors gave it 1/10 each.

It seems the review is still up on the website?

Maybe it takes a while to update? Can a retraction note/edit or something be placed in the meantime?

off topic but that Sam Harris championing Charles Murray stuff is infuriating, recently completely fell out with a friend over it

It would be a massive shame if a dreadful review of a rubbish album by a rubbish band precipitated the closing of DIS.

Nor should it be. It’s not like DiS is the only outlet who deals with this sort of stuff. cough The Fader cough

@sean, I have no idea how you run the site or what goes into it but would it be worth exploring the possibility of giving a trusted forum user admin powers for the main site? I am sure many would volunteer for free as it is rare they would need to do much, but on the odd occasion that something like this may occur, it allows things to potentially be addressed sooner.

I understand this is something you may not want to go for but just a suggestion

To be clear, I’m not threatening to close DiS because of this. I’m also not trying to shutdown dissent and debate about the rights and wrongs of the site. This ialso definitely is not about me, this is a far bigger issue than my feelings of shock, horror and deep remorse. This does highlight a symptom of a lot of complicated issues.

However, I think it’s important context that we do not have the resources to manage the site 24/7 and I do not have oversight over what is and isn’t published. I don’t have time to check the forums regularly or get involved in moderation decisions.

I have been rethinking what DiS is, for a very long time. It’s 10 years since I had funding for the site and to start the Quietus. The site has hobbled along ever since behind the scenes and tried to keep a semblance of service as usual. Our traffic has remained stable (if anything it’s up a little on average per article) and the forums have flourished since relaunching then. However, advertising continues to tumble (thanks Facebook, YouTube Etc) and there’s a lot that the site isn’t doing that I’d like it to do but we don’t have the resource. There are also times like these when it’s doing the opposite of what it should be doing. If you think you collectively have high standards for the site’s quality and moral compass, then I can assure you that I’m right there with you.

Derek (features) and Andrzej (reviews) have oversight of the site. They just both had other commitments last night.

If someone just randomly logged in and deleted things without a conversation it opens up a lot of dodgy possibilities and I’m not sure there are many people I would trust to do this without a huge amount of getting to know them.

when i wrote for DiS there was no aggregate score thing, it was down to the writer and the editor

There are two scores. The writer’s and a user score (most users don’t vote though so it often doesn’t appear). It was an idea I introduced when I wanted to turn DiS into Rotten Tomatoes for music.

Nice idea - I never realised there was a user score (my bad). I find a user score can be helpful when looking at potential albums on Metacritic or Album of the Year. Especially when they deviate significantly from the critic’s rating. Well, if the DiS review section is not DiScontinued (sorry), perhaps I will rate a few albums as and when …

Let me add my voice to those who have said ‘well-handled’ Sean. Not an easy situation at all.

that’s Pitchfork. they’re the only site/publication i’ve ever heard of doing this.

Yeah thats fair

And apparently even that isn’t true

While we’re on the topic assigning a numerical value to signify worth of a piece of music is completely idiotic and entirely meaningless. Just say if you liked it or not, and why someone else may like it or not.
