Dunno if this is weird enough but have had this song by Deux on repeat all week, love it so much. Just something about it which is so appealing, from the odd little synth flourishes that sound like a phone ringing or a car horn beeping to the male/female vocals switching between half-sung french and english. Whole album is great but this is the stand out song in my book.

Arguably the king of obscure, weird 80s music at the moment is the Belgian label Stroom, run by Nosedrip. His regular NTS show is packed with gems, and they’ve reissued some amazing stuff in the last few years:

It’s the first one I heard (Spencer Clarke from the Skaters reissued it on his label a few years back) and it’s always been my favourite. From what I’ve heard (and I haven’t heard anything like everything) their output is quite varied and not all of it is like this. Their earlier stuff is more synth pop and there’s a bit of a minimal wave vibe to some of them too, but most of the releases from the later 80s are closer to Half Dead Ganja Music. Loads to dive into for sure.

Glad you like this one – one of my favourite 80s albums for sure. Didn’t know it was on Bandcamp till I Googled it to put it in this thread. Must be one of the best PWYL albums on there

The single was released in 1978 but appeared on their debut album came out in 1980. Barnes & Barnes were Robert Haimer and Bill Mumy, the latter played Will Robinson in 1960s show Lost in Space.

Not remotely weird musically (pure C86 jangly indie pop.) But always found the lyrics very intriguing as CVB insist they were intentionally random nonsense but “Some people say the bowling alley’s got big lanes / some people say the bowling alleys all look the same” sounds like a clever takedown of fascist meatheads.

Not particularly weird, and probably not obscure, but I picked up The Lover Speaks S/T (released in 1986) on vinyl at a record fair for a quid a couple of years ago and it’s somehow made its way into my regularly played albums.

Annie Lennox covered “No More I Love You’s” in the 90’s so it’s probably a case of me not being familiar with them rather than them being obscure or weird or anything. Great though. Bassline in this makes me think of Interpol at points.
