Reckon this record was the first time as a kid that I departed from whatever the zeitgeist in angsty but still pretty parent-friendly popular rock music was. Just had no interest in it, and even as a teen preffered their early stuff (Drowning Lessons remains a fucking tune, tbf). But it was the exact first time my younger sisters got into whatever the zeitgeist in angsty but parent-friendly popular rock music was, so have some nostalgic affection for it because of that.
Haven’t heard it in years, imagine it doesn’t sound at all dissimilar now to the stuff I enjoyed and considered it a mockery of at the time.
Calling it parent-friendly but then remembering that Daily Mail piece on My Chemical Romance being a suicide cult, lol.

Listening to it as a grown-up makes that nonsense so much funnier as well. It’s such a ludicrously camp record, wild to think of people being scared about it!

I vividly recall it because I’ve only read the Mail once in my life, and it was because it was free on a flight and I had genuinely never heard of it before in my life (completely not all politically-engaged parents and the occasional copy of The Sun or The Mirror around the house). Felt absolutely wild to me that grown ups could be so stupid.
Saw em with my mum at Leeds Fest, 2005 she didnt like Gerard Way swearing so much
I worked in a newsagents at the exact time, I think selling thousands of copies of the Daily Mail every single day for a year was the most politicising period of my life.
