Title tracks that aren't on the album

presumably left off “Houses of the Holy”, and included on “Physical Graffiti”

Enjoy random things like this! 2 Belle & Sebastian examples…

The Life Pursuit was a b side for Blues are Still Blue from the Life Pursuit but not actually on the album

And A Bit of Previous was put out as a standalone track after release of the album of the same name (and came as a 7 inch with the special edition of the album) but wasn’t on the album proper

was this always the plan?

‘always’ is a tricky thing to define

originally the album had a long version that was 17 tracks in total; the 8 that made the final cut, four of the 5 on the EP, and 5 others (still unreleased). When I split them into the album, EP & rejects I didn’t have names for all the tracks but I had always liked the idea - inspired directly by PJ Harvey & ‘Dry’ - of releasing an album that didn’t include the title track … so I named the album and the track in that manner

makes sense! i’m always weirdly fascinated by the thought process behind ideas like this, or like artists who have more than one name they release things under and how they decide whether summat should be put out in one name or the other

It actually ended up being quite confusing for people as the EP came out about two months before the album… so it was annoying trying to communicate it

honestly wish I had been on top of this from years ago - I’m stuck without about 5 different projects that should be under different names but I don’t know where the edges are and so lots never get released . I was listening to a shit tonne of unreleased demos this weekend and considering this conumdrum

Guided by Voices ‘The Grand Hour’ EP with two future title tracks.

I didn’t know this! That song is track 6 of 12 on my copy of Asleep in the Back, but you’re quite right – per Wikipedia:

“The title track, Asleep in the Back, was only included as a bonus track on later editions of the album after it had been released as a single and became the band’s first Top 20 hit.”

There’s probably a separate thread to be made about bonus tracks that were inserted into the middle of the album instead of tacked on at the end. The only other example that springs to mind is Handbags & Gladrags by Stereophonics (track 7 of 12 on Just Enough Education to Perform).

Dummy is another album that falls into that bracket. I can’t listen to either version of the albums with the extra songs in the middle. It jars.

A beautiful song that only got released on a bonus edition. The proper album closer IMO.

This cool, spooky track never made it onto the regular release.

i think the first Zutons album did the same thing but not a title track so not for this thread

I’ll accept the yellow card for this not quite matching the brief but I think it’s close enough and obviously enough connected to be in the spirit of the thread

Dodgy. Homegrown the album came out in 94, the track of the same name on 96’s Free Peace Sweet.

A song preceding the album example. Lush’s Lovelife was on Split in 1994, then the Lovelife album followed in 96.
