I was really lucky that work paid for my lessons/test because they thought it would be useful for me to drive for work. Turned out after I’d passed you needed to have had your license for 2 years or something to drive a hire car, so never got to use it :rofl:

I then didn’t drive for about 5 years. When I finally got a car it was an automatic, purely because a friend’s grandma was selling it really cheaply. Dreading the day I have to drive a manual again!

I took my first lessons when I was 18 and passed when I was 30, mostly because I couldn’t really be arsed with it.

My best advice is to buy your own (cheap) car and get friends / loved ones to come out with you in it as soon as you’ve had a few lessons. Keep driving your own car alongside professional lessons. This is hands down the best way to build your confidence and you’ll get used to driving an older car as well as a newer one, plus you wont feel nervous driving a car without dual controls.

I remember getting such bad foot cramp when I learnt to drive
Did anyone else get that? Took me ages to get over it!

Used to give me a lot of trouble with my knees, but then do do other things like running, squats, and existing.

I used to go out with either my mum or dad and they’d let me drive to my boyfriends or friends or wherever I was going.

It massively helped when my dad was in the car but If I went with my mum, she’s regularly pull the handbreak up when someone was crossing the road miles away and I was going slow. Or if she thought the lights may change to red (when we’re approaching them and they’re green) she’d just yank it up?? She was a fucking nightmare.

My mum still grips onto any handle she can when I’m driving. Mind you she doesn’t get out of fourth gear herself

You can hire dual control cars, which would be great for practice with a pal. Think it’s not that expensive, maybe about £14 an hour. Not sure. I’m sure Arnold Clark does it.

My mum is a terrible driver and overly cautious!
How the hell she got done for speeding, i’ll never know. I’ve never seen her go above 25 miles an hour.

I got my licence at 17, although it took three tests to get me there. Over the next three decades I have owned precisely one car, which I made one journey in, from my uncle’s who was handing it down to me to my parents’ house where it stayed until I got someone to take it away (It didn’t work very well).

My dad’s written off three cars and drives like a nutjob. If I got the chance to scare him as a passenger I would consider it sweet sweet payback.

I remember completely tensing up and feeling exhausted and achey after every lesson. The instructor used to tell me off for not leaning back in the seat.

Last summer I drove my dad, in his car, from Paris to Lillle with him navigating. Complete disaster.

Someone had an actual full blown panic attack in my car the other week. We hadn’t even left the car park.

Admittedly it was because a few years ago she was in a near-fatal car accident, but still.

Oh god… my dad is very nervous about driving anyway. He’s an excellent driver himself but he really freaks out about me getting in the car with literally anyone, even now. I was avoiding telling him I’m getting a lift up tomorrow. He seemed to take it pretty well, after I repeatedly told him how long my friend has been driving, how nice her car is and that my bf will be there too :smiley: he insisted I sit in the back.
