Top 5 songs of the year

Janelle Monae - Django Jane - gives me actual shivers and emotions every single time I listen to it, so much righteous fun
Leon Bridge - Beyond - it’s romantic cheese but I got married this year so I’m allowed
Ebo Taylor - Mind Your Own Business - singalong afrobeat brilliance
Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet - Nothing Left But Their Names - 9 minute epic about animal extinction with Laurie’s voice lowered an octave, absolutely spellbinding
Joachim Cooder - Because The Moonlight - another soppy one, listened to the album loads driving around sunny Italian forest with wife and it has become a strong memory evoker. Really great groove with all vibes and chimes and stuff

Car Seat Headrest - Body’s

Just a joyous, upbeat tune.

Drug Church - Unlicensed Hall Monitor

Rousing rocking anthem

Spielbergs - We are All Going To Die

Reminds me of early Supergrass and The Stills

Ginger Wildheart - Don’t Lose Your Tail, Girl

A 9 minute epic that joins about 10 parts of songs together. Acoustic, metal, hip hop mash up.

Car Seat Headrest - Sober To Death
Just beautiful. The lyric “Every conversation just ends with you screaming
Not even words, just ahh-ahh-ahh” kills me every tiime.

That Ginger Wildheart song is absolutely mental! Wow

Glad you like it! Thanks for listening to it!
The album that it’s on, G.A.S.S. Mk II, is incredible too.

Wow, can’t believe Drug Church completely passed me by this year - on first listen this reminds me of Beach Slang, has a proper fist-pumping end-of-an-80s-teen-film feel. Will need to check out the album.

That moby track is gorgeous.

Controversial opinion; if he hasn’t sold every track on Play to 100 different car adverts, he would be spoken of in the same breath as Uncle and DJ Shadow.

Drug Church was put on my radar (and a few other people too) by the wonderful @Severed799

1. Metric- Dark Saturday- Can’t think of another track I’ve played individually so much after the first listen.
2. Lucy Dacus- Nightshift- For a carsingalongability few can match.
3. Suede- Life is Golden- fatherhood has inspired ‘our’ Brett to write an unusually upbeat classic. It’s slow-build, anthemic qualities may attract the attentions of the reality TV soundtrack brigade though, so enjoy it while it’s free as its future may be bleak.
4. Hero Fisher- If I Die and Nothing Happens- Like heroine, I imagine, it didn’t really register at first, but before I knew what was what, it had developed into an all-consuming addiction. Marvellous!
5. Let’s Eat Grandma- Donnie Darko- like it’s namesake, it’s both terrifically entertaining and utterly fucking demented.
