I’m your typical holidays in Eastern Europe DiS wanker, however the changing of the seasons and the rain on the window is making me think of winter escapes to sunnier climes. I’ve never been to the likes of Lanzarote, Tenerife, Crete or Cyprus for example - am I missing out? I love Madeira and used to regularly visit the much maligned Albufeira out of season which was a fantastic cheap base for exploring the Algarve. Are there other recommendations?
Do you mean going to these places for things other than resorts? Lanzarote has cool volcanic landscapes. Had a nice time in Crete but that was mainly going to the beach.

Yes, I’m not really a pool person so need some walking, history and culture.
Sitges in Spain was brilliant
Porec in Croatia was fantastic
Pretty much anywhere in Greece is steeped in history

Tenerife is lovely, plenty of stunning hikes to do and I went to a classical concert when I was there.
Benidorm also has a lovely beach (and a surprisingly good night out, lots of queer bars).

We went to Palma in Mallorca last year and had a lovely time in the city, travelling out to Soller (and Port Soller), and cycling up and down the promenade of Palma Bay.
We also went to Lanzarote in February, and had a good time. I don’t think we’ll go back, but there’s more than enough for a week with the volcanoes, César Manrique architecture and beaches.
Malaga is a great city to spend time in as well. More for a long weekend, but go outside of peak season and you’ll have a lovely time.

Thanks for the tips, I’ve been to Mallorca and loved it. Malaga is on the list, we had planned to go last March but didn’t get around to sorting flights which was fortunate because Storm Martinho hit when we would have been there.
Other than lads’ holidays back in the day, haven’t really been on many traditional resorty type holidays as Mrs Zygotic just isn’t interested and Ive always had a bit of a reluctance, but we did go to Cyprus a couple of years back. The Turkish north, in particular, is beautiful, undeveloped and distinctly characteristic. However, we didn’t stay in a resort complex. We hired a car and didn’t stay in any one location for more than a few nights. Would recommend. It’s a fascinating island.

Alcudia old town is about a half hour walk from the beach. Very small and extremely chilled, and you can easily keep away from the Brits Abroad bit (didn’t even really see it properly myself when I was heading to the beach)
Puerto Pollenca just along the coast is lovely too.
Obviously not as far south as some of the options you’re looking at for a winter sun holiday but maybe @Lo-Pan can give a view on that

Yeah the trips you can do are all super cool too. Lanzarote is definitely a place to explore rather than stay around the pool

Depends on the month - November to Feb in Mallorca can be pretty wet and cold (10 degrees-ish)
I think if you want almost guaranteed winter sun and temperatures, then it sort of has to be the Canary Islands in ‘Europe’ - not even sure the Greek islands are particularly mild in midwinter

Went to Tenerife this May but stayed in Los Christianos which is effectively a British enclave. I did however have a day out to the capital, Santa Cruz, which was very hip and well worth a visit

Lots of really good food in Tenerife and bars even in the touristy areas, just have to look for them.
As above Santa Cruz he a beautiful little city too, with a really nice botanical garden and a few interesting museums
